Michaela Coel, known for her acclaimed work, is teaming up with A24 once again to create a fresh take on the popular 1988 martial arts film Bloodsport. This will be the third project Coel has written and directed for the independent studio.
The news has generated a lot of excitement, as Coel is celebrated for her unique storytelling style. The original Bloodsport helped launch Jean-Claude Van Damme’s career, starring him as an American soldier who uses his ninja skills to compete in a brutal underground tournament in Hong Kong. Coel is deeply fascinated by the mental and physical challenges faced by professional fighters. She’s long admired their discipline, focus, and the sacrifices they make for the sport, which inspired this new project. Marc Toberoff and Alberto Lensi will produce the upcoming martial arts film, with Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle serving as executive producers. A24 is financing the project and will handle distribution worldwide.
Toberoff’s involvement is particularly noteworthy because of his previous work with the original film and his experience with well-known franchises. He emphasized the importance of the first Bloodsport movie, noting how it first brought the look and feel of mixed martial arts to a wider audience.
“The original Bloodsport really introduced audiences to the exciting world of mixed martial arts back in 1988, and I’m excited to bring that same energy and tournament style back to theaters,” Toberoff said.
The first film spawned three sequels in the late 1990s, but none of them starred Jean-Claude Van Damme. Several attempts have been made to revive the series, most recently in 2013, but none have made it to the screen.
Michaela Coel’s involvement suggests a new direction for the franchise, which has been inactive for many years. Currently, Coel is working on ‘First Day on Earth,’ a highly anticipated miniseries for A24, HBO, and the BBC.
She’s a multi-talented force on that project, serving as the writer, executive producer, co-director, and star. In addition to her work behind the camera, she continues to be a highly sought-after actress.
Audiences will soon see Michaela Coel in the A24 film Mother Mary, starring alongside Anne Hathaway and directed by David Lowery. She’s also landed a role in Stephen Soderbergh’s new movie, The Christophers, with Ian McKellen.
