The recent palpitations in the software sector, a distinctly undignified scramble, have been laid at the door of Anthropic. One gathers they’ve contrived a method for automated code patching, a sort of digital valet to tidy up the vulnerabilities inherent in modern programming. The market, predictably, has thrown a fit. It seems the assumption is that expertise, diligently purchased and maintained, is now disposable.
Anthropic’s latest offering, a facility for identifying and rectifying security flaws, has predictably unsettled the guardians of our digital ramparts. The thought, apparently, is that this represents a genuine threat to the established order. One observes a rather hysterical selling of cybersecurity equities. A perfectly reasonable response, of course, if one believes that a clever algorithm can truly replace years of accrued knowledge and, frankly, a healthy dose of paranoia.
The panic, however, strikes me as rather overblown. This is a useful tool, certainly, for addressing the inevitable cracks in the software edifice. But it is hardly a comprehensive defense against the increasingly inventive and determined adversaries lurking in the digital shadows. That particular duty remains best entrusted to specialists – those, for instance, at CrowdStrike (CRWD 2.36%) – and the current dip in their share price presents a rare opportunity for those with a modicum of foresight.
The Illusion of Impregnability
CrowdStrike’s strength lies in endpoint protection – a rather grand term for preventing unauthorized access to one’s laptop, or, more accurately, the sensitive data contained within. They achieve this through constant monitoring, employing artificial intelligence to detect and neutralize threats before they can cause mischief. Anthropic’s offering, while commendable, merely addresses the symptoms; CrowdStrike, in contrast, attempts to prevent the disease altogether. A subtle, but crucial, distinction that the more excitable elements of the market seem to have overlooked.
Following the Anthropic announcement, CrowdStrike’s shares experienced a decline of some 10%, adding to the general malaise afflicting the software sector. The stock now trades at a discount of approximately 40% to its previous peak. A rather dramatic reversal, though not entirely unexpected in these capricious times. One recalls a similar episode last July, triggered by a rather unfortunate software update. The present situation, however, lacks the same degree of catastrophic mismanagement, and therefore presents a more compelling buying opportunity.
A Momentary Lapse in Valuation
CrowdStrike, for much of its existence as a public company, has commanded a premium valuation. Investors, rightly or wrongly, recognize the escalating need for robust cybersecurity solutions, particularly in an age where attackers are increasingly aided by generative AI. The company’s profitability has fluctuated, owing to its aggressive pursuit of market share. Consequently, a comparison of its current price-to-sales ratio with historical levels offers a more reliable gauge of its true worth.
Outside of the general market correction of 2023 and the aforementioned update debacle, CrowdStrike hasn’t been this reasonably priced in some time.

A price-to-sales ratio of 19 times may not be considered cheap in the grand scheme of things, but it represents a fair price for a leader in a field that is becoming increasingly critical. Cybersecurity, one suspects, is not a task best entrusted to amateur coders. A reliable, proven solution is worth a premium, and CrowdStrike, despite the current anxieties, remains precisely that.
While Anthropic’s security feature is a welcome development for those creating artificial intelligence applications, it is unlikely to render CrowdStrike’s services obsolete anytime soon. An opportunity to acquire a best-in-class company at a temporarily discounted price is a rare occurrence indeed. To ignore it would be, shall we say, imprudent. One suspects those who do will be left to rue their inaction in the years to come.
