HBO is releasing a new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones universe. Unlike Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, which covered vast storylines, this new show is based on Martin’s shorter Tales of Dunk & Egg novellas. Because of this, and with input from showrunner Ira Parker and Martin himself, HBO decided to make the episodes only thirty minutes long – a shorter format than previous series. Here’s what Parker shared about the decision to keep the episodes concise.
Parker explained that the show’s format significantly changed his creative process. Initially, he expected a traditional 10-episode, hour-long series. But when HBO suggested six half-hour episodes for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, he felt relieved. Knowing they didn’t need to stretch the source material, he focused on letting the story guide the adaptation. They expanded on the characters and world-building, adding depth and vibrancy, but primarily added to the existing story rather than making major changes. The shorter, 30-minute episodes ultimately allowed for a remarkably faithful adaptation of The Hedge Knight.
After we learned that Parker decided on the length of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the showrunner strongly confirmed it, saying it was a mutual decision. They explained that everyone agreed this length would best suit the story, and George R.R. Martin was heavily involved and pleased with the choice. Martin had initially suggested a movie-length format, which makes sense given the amount of material, but the final episode ended up being about twice as long as that. It was a collaborative effort, blending Martin’s vision with the team’s approach.
It’s great to see George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker working well together! Plus, our team at TopMob.com believes keeping the episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms around thirty minutes long was a smart move that ultimately benefited the series.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and its short episodes air Sundays at 10pm PT/ET on HBO.
