Many viewers of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms might not be familiar with George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, or even his A Song of Ice and Fire books. Some will only know the world of Westeros through the HBO series. However, longtime readers of Martin’s work know that his characters often share similarities, even across different eras. So, when TopMob had the opportunity to speak with the cast of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms before its release, we asked them which characters from Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon they felt were most similar to their own.
As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by characters who have striking doubles – whether they’re legendary partners, brave heroes, loyal sidekicks, or even notorious villains. Some of the best performances in cinema history, in my opinion, come from these incredible doppelgangers.

Peter Claffey – Ser Duncan the Tall (a.k.a. Dunk)

There are a couple of clear connections. One is the link to Brienne of Tarth, which some believe could be a family trait. And there’s a strong similarity between the two characters. I think Brienne faces even greater challenges because, as a woman, trying to become a knight in Westeros is incredibly difficult – it’s ten times harder for her.

The relationship between the Hound and Arya in the later seasons of Game of Thrones shares some similarities with the dynamic between Dunk and Egg, though it’s a much harsher connection. While Dunk and Egg have a playful, if sometimes tense, bond, the Hound and Arya’s companionship is colder and more antagonistic. Just as Dunk might threaten Egg with a slap, the Hound is constantly willing to strike Arya. Despite the differences, a resemblance to the Dunk and Egg pairing is still noticeable.
It’s difficult to make a direct comparison, but you can definitely see similarities between Dunk and Jon Snow. Dunk’s strong sense of right and wrong, his kindness, and bravery are all qualities Jon Snow possesses. However, like Jon, those good qualities can also get Dunk into trouble.

I was so excited for the roundtable, but sadly young Dexter Sol Ansell, the adorable actor who plays Egg, couldn’t make it. Thankfully, his character—his knight, that is—stepped in to speak for him! It was a really unique experience.
I think Egg is naturally good, but without Dunk’s influence, he’s starting to resemble a weaker, more passive character – similar to how Viserys Targaryen was with Daenerys early on. Dunk is really bringing out the best in him, and without that, Egg’s goodness seems to be slipping away.
Without Dunk’s influence, he easily could have become another cruel Targaryen. While there have been both good and bad Targaryens, a select few are truly awful people.
Daniel Ings – Ser Lyonel Baratheon “The Laughing Storm”

I think my character is fundamentally a Baratheon, definitely showing traits of Robert – like enjoying drinking and a good fight. Similar to Robert, he feels a bit lost when he’s not involved in conflict. However, unlike Robert, who was weighed down by the responsibility of the throne and power, my character, Lyonel, isn’t burdened by that. He’s free to seek out battles whenever he can.

Sam Spruell – Prince Maekar Targaryen

I see my character, like Daniel’s, as fundamentally Targaryen. I think I embody their ambition and willingness to do whatever it takes to get ahead, reflecting the family’s inherent flaws. However, the Targaryens we meet in the show are weakened and have to work harder to maintain control, using negotiation and alliances instead of simply relying on their traditional power and dragons. It’s a fascinating and vulnerable time for them.
Hey Finn, this is Mikey Walsh from TopMob. I’m challenging you to try not to give the most predictable answer. Honestly, with everyone I’ve spoken to today, I think it would be really easy for you to fall into that trap.
Tanzyn Crawford – Tanselle Too-Tall

That’s a tricky one. When I watch shows like Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, sometimes you notice a background actor who just draws your eye, and that’s how I see Tanselle. She’s not likely to be a main character, and she shares traits with a lot of different people. What makes her stand out is that she’s quiet and doesn’t seek attention. She just is, and she happens to be part of this story because Dunk is in this tournament. She wouldn’t see herself as special, and in another show, she’d probably just be a face in the crowd, which is actually quite compelling.
Finn Bennett – Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen

We asked Finn Bennett, the actor who plays the show’s villain, to avoid naming the most predictable characters – like Joffrey Baratheon or Ramsay Bolton – when answering. His response was surprisingly good.
You know, after thinking it over, I’m leaning towards Tyrion Lannister as the more compelling character. Aerion definitely has potential, but he feels like he needs a big moment to really shine, especially when we start seeing things from Dunk’s perspective. Aerion seems driven by a desire to be remembered, to make a real splash. And honestly, Tyrion is just a master plotter, super smart, and I think Aerion has that same kind of intelligence, but Tyrion’s skills would really elevate the story.
Shaun Thomas – Raymun Fossoway

Thomas: Off the top of my head, I must say Podric (Payne). Yeah. I’ll go with that. (This answer makes total sense considering earlier in the roundtable Thomas described Raymun as “lighthearted, happy-go-lucky,” someone who will “do the right thing, do what he feels in his heart.”)
