It’s possible that you haven’t noticed, but in James Gunn’s version of Superman, one of the character’s long-time enemies might make a significant appearance as a cameo. During a scene where a disheartened Superman converses with Lois in his apartment, a massive fight can be seen outside his window, involving the Justice League and something indistinct. It appears to be an energy bubble, making it difficult to discern the details. At this point, Superman mentions, “It’s just a dimensional imp.” Interestingly, the DC Universe has more than one character from other dimensions known as imps. However, the most well-known one is Mister Mxyzptlk, who has been causing trouble for Superman since the 1940s. And if you’re curious about how to pronounce his name, “Superman: The Animated Series” helpfully explained it for everyone.
Originating from comic book series “Superman” #30 in 1944, Mr. Mxyzptlk was an advanced being resembling a gnome or elf from the five-dimensional realm of Zrfff. His appearance, with a purple suit, bow tie, and bowler hat, suggested he had stepped out of a Vaudeville show. Possessing powers to manipulate reality, Mxyzptlk displayed godlike abilities. In essence, he utilized magic – one of the very few things that could challenge Superman. He frequently entered our dimension to tease Superman and execute large-scale pranks. Known colloquially as Mxy, he ranks among the select few villains in Superman’s roster who possess abilities surpassing his own might.
Instead of being an outright villain, Mxy repeatedly vexed the Man of Steel by devising various mischiefs. However, there were certain regulations governing these antics. If Superman could make Mxy utter his name in reverse, he would vanish into his own realm for a span of 90 days. Yet, as predictable as clockwork, Mxy would return three months later, and Superman would find a way to coerce the imp to say his name backwards again. This pattern persisted over several decades. Despite its absurdity, this situation compelled Superman to use his intellect rather than his brawn to solve problems for a change.
During the Silver Age, Mxyzptlk abandoned his traditional business attire for a futuristic sci-fi outfit, making frequent appearances. His popularity was so immense that Batman acquired a fifth-dimensional counterpart, Bat-Mite. This character often flaunted extravagant demonstrations of power and, in the ’80s, even switched the genders of everyone on Earth, including Superman’s Justice League companions. Wonder Woman became Wonder Warrior, Batman became Batwoman, and so forth. In more contemporary comics, The Joker gained powers, transforming into a psychotic version of Mxyzptlk. Fortunately, he could reverse everything with a simple snap of his fingers, and usually did. Notably, Q from Star Trek was heavily inspired by DC’s Mxyzptlk.
Initially, Mxy made his debut in animated series such as the 1966 “Adventures of Superman” cartoon and subsequently multiple times on “Super Friends”. He later appeared in shows like “Superman: The Animated Series” and most recently “My Adventures With Superman”, undergoing a dramatic transformation into an anime-inspired appearance. Live-action series including “Lois & Clark”, “Smallville”, and “Supergirl” also featured their own versions of Mxy, but they chose to portray the character as an ordinary individual instead of maintaining his comic book look. To be accurate, Mxy has the ability to assume any form he desires, so this decision makes sense.
Are we certain that the Justice Gang is battling Mxyzptlk? Not completely, as it might be Bat-Mite causing all the trouble instead. You see, Bat-Mite is a mischievous fifth-dimensional creature who adores Batman, and John Economos from “Peacemaker” mentioned him. James Gunn also appreciates these pesky beings from DC Comics history. However, since Bat-Mite usually targets Batman, we’re assuming the imp in Superman is actually Mxyzptlk. Whether he’ll make another appearance in the DCU remains uncertain, but it seems likely given that we now know he exists. And who knows? Maybe a famous actor will don the iconic bowler hat next time!
