EDWorks. Brings Cozy Conversation Pit to Woodland Cabin

Summary

  • EDWorks. has unveiled a metal-clad getaway cabin in the hills of Kozak Plateau, centered around a conversation pit embedded into the local terrain.

In a tranquil setting on Kozak Plateau’s hills, Istanbul architect EDWorks has designed a serene hideaway, carefully built upon an existing stone vineyard wall to preserve the pristine environment. The cabin, boasting a rusted metal exterior, showcases a contemporary structure that harmoniously blends with its surroundings thanks to its aged patina and rough wooden interior walls.

As a keen admirer, I’d like to highlight that according to designer Edizel Demirel, the essence of the structure is forged by the dance of two contrasting tectonic philosophies, manifested through the choice of materials, construction methods, and production processes. This intriguing interplay creates a fascinating juxtaposition between local characteristics and foreign influences.

The interior, resembling a tall tent, is covered with wooden panels and reinforced by diagonal brown metal beams, mirroring the style of Scandinavian architecture. At its heart lies a sunken living space called the central conversation pit, which blends seamlessly with the natural contours of the hillside, providing a very earthy sensation. Adjacent areas like the ‘wet zones’ and other rooms are connected as extensions to this central unit. Upstairs on the loft, the sleeping area is suspended above the pit.

The windows of the house, projecting outwards, face an expansive vista through their frames. These windows are referred to as the “eyes” by the designer, offering striking architectural instances that connect the indoor and outdoor spaces.
