To be honest, I can’t stand it when extraterrestrial creatures invade my nasal cavity and attempt to seize control of my mind. It gives me the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it!

Shinichi found himself disliking the ordeal since it significantly disrupted his normal life. Fortunately, the parasite could only invade his right hand, sparing his intellect. Unfortunately, this parasite had developed the power to control Shinichi’s arm, even going as far as transforming his hand into a tool for its own purposes.

Over time, Shinichi forms a strange bond with his parasitic companion, Migi, as they jointly confront other parasites and delve into diverse life perspectives together.

I find Shinichi’s character utterly captivating, particularly his struggle to accept Migi and the invasion that came with it. His awkwardness and sheer panic make him an adorable goofball, yet his bravery and unwavering resolve to do what’s right transform him into a genuine superhero in my eyes.

13. Jake Long – American Dragon: Jake Long

A bit of a technicality, but we’ll count it.

Jake Long is known as the American Dragon, but he boasts Chinese roots through his maternal lineage, where the dragon blood resides. Balancing his responsibilities as a guardian of America’s mystical beings with his everyday life as a typical high school student is no easy feat for him.

Jake employs his extraordinary shape-shifting skills to combat the Huntsclan, a covert group of ninja bounty hunters renowned for capturing magical beings. Among their targets is the American Dragon. In this endeavor, Jake has the assistance of several intriguing figures such as his grandfather and dragon mentor, Luong Lao Shi.

Jake Long, a character dreamed up by writer Jeff Goode, made his debut in Goode’s popular children’s book series, American Dragon. Later, Disney adapted the books into an animated television series that ran for two seasons, significantly boosting the character’s fame.

But very few people ever want to see Kung Lao take his hat off for them.

In my humble opinion as a movie critic, the enigmatic Shaolin Master and co-champion of Mortal Kombat, Kung Lao, is unjustifiably overlooked in the realm of superheroes. This undervaluation becomes even more perplexing when one recalls his heroic deeds in liberating Earthrealm from the oppressive grasp of Shao Khan, a tyrant who sought to enslave our world as a mere slave driver.

Kung Lao is known as one of the iconic characters in the Mortal Kombat video game franchise, making his first appearance in Mortal Kombat II back in 1993. As per the storyline of MK, Kung Lao is a descendant of Earthrealm’s initial Mortal Kombat champion, the Great Kung Lao. He hails from the Chinese nation within Earthrealm.

In the game “Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks,” Kung Lao’s presence is notably impressive among many notable moments. Partnering with fellow Shaolin monk and latest Mortal Kombat victor, Liu Kang, Kung Lao embarks on a journey to the Outworld dimension. The objective? To defeat the interdimensional emperor Shao Khan and his sorcerer deputy, Shang Tsung, who have breached the rules of Mortal Kombat by launching an unprovoked attack on Earth.

With his reliable hat-like sword, Kung Lao conquers adversaries such as Baraka, Reptile, Scorpion, and Goro prior to aiding Liu Kang in overpowering Shang Tsung and Shao Khan. The pair additionally team up with Johnny Cage to safeguard the Wu Shi Shaolin temple when Baraka and his Tarkata army launch an attack.

Kung Lao showcases an astounding array of fighting techniques derived from Wushu poses. He also has the ability to quickly move short distances and surprise opponents from behind. His distinctive hat is often used in various moves, either as a close-combat weapon or thrown projectile. The majority of his fatalities and brutality finishes feature his hat in some manner…no play on words intended.

10. Liu Kang – Mortal Kombat

Liu Kang is often recognized as the main character of the Mortal Kombat series, appearing more times than many others, second only to Sub-Zero. He’s also notable for having emerged victorious in the Mortal Kombat tournament across multiple games.

Originating from Henan Province in China, Liu Kang was born to parents Lee Kang and Lin Kang. This humble hero and fearless warrior has demonstrated remarkable courage and dedication throughout his life. With unwavering discipline, intense focus, mystical powers, and extraordinary combat abilities, Liu Kang consistently outmatches even the most formidable adversaries such as Shao Khan and the perilous Outworld realm.

Liu Kang practices a style of martial arts reminiscent of Bruce Lee’s Kungfu, characterized by lethal kicks. Additionally, he possesses the ability to summon and throw fireballs using magic, and can imbue his fists and feet with fire for powerful attacks.

Moreover, Liu Kang possesses the ability to metamorphose into a fearsome dragon and consume his adversaries, given sufficient determination and focus. Furthermore, I can’t help but appreciate the intense shrieks that punctuate numerous assaults he executes.

9. Ken Kaneki – Tokyo Ghoul

In my opinion, the enigmatic world of “Tokyo Ghoul,” crafted by Sui Ishida, is a lesser-known gem in the realm of dark sci-fi fantasy. This captivating manga and anime series seamlessly blends elements that any fan of this genre would appreciate, from its intriguing protagonist to its enthralling narrative.

Initially, Ken Kaneki was an ordinary college student, but a fateful date with his beloved Rize Kamishiro took a disastrous turn, leaving him hospitalized. In a desperate bid to keep him alive, doctors transplanted some of Rize’s organs into Kaneki’s body, inadvertently granting him ghoul-like traits.

For those unfamiliar, “ghoul characteristics” include a unique biological feature called a “kagune”, along with an intense craving for human meat. Fortunately, he stumbles upon a group of ghouls who offer him employment at a covert coffee shop, also instructing him on how to navigate the boundary between being human and ghoul.

Ken Kaneki isn’t just intriguing due to his talent for annihilating foes with his newly acquired power, but because of his resilience in battling the internal struggle he faces, as his monstrous nature yearns to dominate him completely.

8. Guts – Berserk

In the realm of Berserk, the boundaries between goodness and evil are blurred, more like shades of gray instead of clear-cut distinctions between right and wrong. Characters aren’t purely virtuous or wicked; most have a mix of both…with only a handful that might be considered completely one or the other.

A prime example of this principle is found in the character of our protagonist, who was once a mercenary but transformed into a hero. His inner turmoil, manifested as self-loathing, becomes his driving force to endure hardships and, eventually, perform courageous acts.

From a wretched beginning and nurtured amidst hardship, Guts’ existence was never destined for the limelight. However, his indomitable spirit and exceptional prowess in survival have allowed him to surmount some of life’s harshest ordeals.

In both comic book and animated adaptations of “Berserk”, we join the character named Guts as he progresses from a rudderless mercenary to leading the Band of the Hawk, under his friend Griffith. Wielding his distinctive broadsword, Guts assists Griffith in making his vision a tangible reality.

Born by the late acclaimed artist Kentaro Miura, Guts is recognized as one of Asia’s (and globally) most celebrated anti-heroes and the main protagonist of a hugely successful manga series.

It’s no secret that Samurai Jack stands out as one of Cartoon Network’s most exceptional shows. From its distinctive animation style, to the fantastical settings it portrays, and the peculiar characters it houses, Samurai Jack was truly a show beyond its era.

Absolutely, the central figure is the star of the show. Jack’s abilities and determination are pushed to their extremes by Aku and his relentless horde of minions and spells. Stranded in a strange era, Jack must adapt swiftly to stay alive and seek vengeance against Aku for assaulting his era and realm.

Jack is proficient in multiple combat techniques and continuously expands his repertoire throughout the series. However, he is particularly renowned for his mastery of the samurai sword, one of the rare weapons capable of harming the demon-god Aku. Beyond his warrior skills, Jack is known for his compassionate nature; frequently he extends aid to allies and those in distress, though his good-naturedness can sometimes lead him into difficult situations due to its innocence.

6. L – Death Note

High schooler Kira Yagami, the one who discovered the Death Note, might have also been listed here if he hadn’t developed an alarming belief in his own divine authority instead.

The sharp analytical abilities and deductive prowess of character L significantly contribute to the gripping speed of the Death Note manga and anime. Similar to many geniuses, L has his flaws and frequently exhibits unusual social behaviors and perceptions. He seems to view other human beings as subjects for observation or puzzles to be solved.

Even with his flaws, L’s intellectual prowess stands as a remarkable ability, potentially outsmarting many other heroes on this list. His strategic intellect is particularly captivating, demonstrated by his ability to pinpoint Kira’s location within the Kanto region of Japan through targeted television broadcasts.

5. Eren Yeager – Attack on Titan

In my perspective, I carry a burden of sorrow that’s uncommon for someone my age. The haunting memories of witnessing my mother being consumed by a Titan replay incessantly in my mind, casting a shadow over any moments of joy. This grim outlook on life is what perhaps makes me the fitting protagonist in Hajime Isayama’s masterpiece, Attack on Titan.

Driven by a thirst for retribution, Eren joins the soaring Survey Corps, a military branch of Paradis Island, along with his closest friends Armin Arlert and Mikasa Ackerman. As his military career advances, it isn’t long before he discovers an astonishing truth: He becomes what he detests the most – a titan!

4. Edward Elric – Fullmetal Alchemist

In the country of Amestris, the youngest State Alchemist ever, Edward Elric, stands out as an extraordinary hero, possessing an exceptional talent and fervor for alchemy. Given the escalating danger from formidable homunculi, it’s crucial to have as many heroes left that Gluttony hasn’t devoured.

In the lead role of “Fullmetal Alchemist”, Ed experiences considerable personal growth, but he’s yet to experience a physical growth spurt. Alongside his brother, Alphonse, they undertake a challenging mission to locate the Philosopher’s Stone, essential for healing their damaged bodies. However, during this journey, they uncover an ominous danger lurking close by.

Edward’s adherence to the law of equivalent exchange is a key element in his narrative. The mangaka Hiromu Arakawa skillfully emphasizes this idea in both the manga and the anime series Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, demonstrating that even selfless deeds frequently demand significant concessions.

3. Aang – Avatar: The Last Airbender

In every appearance, the Avatar stands as a beacon of hope and equilibrium. Yet, the young boy with no hair, temporarily halted by time itself, adds an extraordinary layer to this role – he’s the one the entire world patiently anticipated, their elemental champion.

In the midst of destruction, Aang, once belonging to the Airbender tribe, symbolizes a tiny sprout of optimism amidst despair. With such a significant gap in time, the world seems to have largely overlooked or forgotten about the existence of the Avatar.

As the central character in the Tekken fighting game franchise, I, Jin Kazama, have been both blessed and cursed. Born to a loving mother, my life should have been a sanctuary of warmth and affection. Yet, the DNA inherited from my father, tainted with demonic essence, has made my existence a paradox – a dance between light and darkness.

After the gruesome killing of his mother by Ogre, he finds himself reluctantly reconciling with his paternal relatives, including his grandfather Heihachi Mishima, for training. Driven solely by a thirst for vengeance against Ogre, Jin neglects to anticipate Heihachi’s deceit and nearly loses his life as a result.

For Jin, it’s fortunate that he’s hard to kill due to the notorious Devil gene, which allows him to defeat powerful adversaries. Unfortunately, this same Devil gene makes it challenging for him to develop deep relationships, and his relentless pursuit to remove it (even stirring up ancient demons) appears to be an endless struggle.

Originally hailing from the Saiyan homeworld, Planet Vegeta, Goku is one of their descendants who was displaced to Earth due to its destruction at the hands of Frieza. A kind elderly human named Son Gohan found and raised this baby as his grandson. As he matures, Goku’s powers flourish, and he takes on the role of guardian for our planet, defending it against various forms of evil.

On our planet, Goku stands almost invincible due to his extraordinary collection of powers, talents, and capabilities that rank him among the mightiest mortal entities across the universe. His victories in combat are largely attributed to his Saiyan ancestry and indomitable human spirit, fueled by an unwavering desire to emerge triumphant.

As Goku transforms to his basic Super Saiyan form, he gains enough strength to obliterate tiny planets. Incredibly perceptive beings can even detect his power from far-off galaxies. And that’s just the beginning – we haven’t even touched on the advanced Super Saiyan levels Goku can achieve, such as Super Saiyan Blue and Autonomous Ultra Instinct, or the fused Super Saiyans he can create with allies like Vegeta.
