The film, titled “Thunderbolts” – “New Avengers“, persists with its powerful impact despite experiencing one of the fourth-poorest box office openings on a Thursday for any Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut.
All week long, I’ve found myself in a familiar predicament – my chosen movie is sharing the box office with some of Kevin Feige’s other flops, such as “Quantumania,” “Captain America: Brave New World,” and “The Marvels.
As a film enthusiast, I must say that the trajectory for “Thunderbolts – New Avengers” might be on an upward swing. After its initial release on Wednesday, there wasn’t a significant dip in attendance numbers when compared to Thursday’s screening. This could potentially mean that the movie is finding its footing with audiences.
What is the Thunderbolts – New Avengers Thursday box office?
On Thursdays, the New Avengers team earned approximately $4.2 million, representing a 2.7% decrease compared to the substantial drop experienced on Wednesday. This decline in earnings followed an even more significant dip on Tuesday.
Feige’s other Thursday box office takings include:
– $3.9 million for Shang-Chi ($4.6 million adjusted for inflation)
– $3.8 million for Quantumania
– $3.2 million for Captain America: Brave New World
– $1.3 million for The Marvels
Disney has reported to its investors that Captain America 4 and Snow White have been commercial disappointments.
Speaking of “Black Widow”, it featured Florence Pugh as well as Yelena, and made approximately $5 million on its first day in 2021 – roughly equivalent to $6 million today. Notably, this movie was simultaneously released in theaters and on Disney+ during a global “pandemic”.
Thunderbolts – New Avengers: Slowest to $100M
As a fan, I must admit that the thrill of “Thunderbolts – New Avengers” has been unmatched lately, leaving me breathless. However, let’s not forget that “Captain America: Brave New World” made quite an entrance, racing to $100M domestically in a mere four days when it first hit the big screen.
Contrarily, “Thunderbolts” is expected to surpass the $100 million mark on its eighth day in cinemas, including previews – a relatively gradual achievement within the MCU, similar to “Eternals” which took nine days. Notably, “The Marvels” did not achieve this milestone, peaking at $86 million domestically.
Yesterday’s box office analysis revealed some disappointing results that I attribute to questionable creative choices made by Kevin Feige in my opinion.
Big test in weekend two
This upcoming weekend presents a significant challenge for the Thunderbolts – New Avengers, as there aren’t many other titles to contend with before next week brings us Final Destination: Bloodlines. Following that, Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch is set to sweep everything away.
If the film “Thunderbolts – New Avengers” manages to maintain a drop rate below 50%, it’s considered successful, but anything above 60% suggests ongoing issues. Regardless, if it only makes $400M, Thunderbolts – New Avengers would still be fortunate to reach that figure. With an estimated budget of around $300M, Thunderbolts – New Avengers seems poised to join the list of MCU flops from Feige. When will this trend end?
