The Nissan Formula E Team has revealed “NISMO Electric Racer Tokyo,” a unique arcade game with a retro feel, developed in partnership with Japanese artist Kentaro Yoshida. This game was introduced prior to the team’s home event at the 2025 Tokyo E-Prix. The 8-bit game is a tribute to Japan’s rich gaming history and embodies the thrill of street racing against the backdrop of Tokyo’s dazzling neon cityscape.
Currently available on both PC and mobile devices, this retro-styled game lets you assume command of a digitally rendered Nissan Formula E vehicle, racing through a simulated Tokyo cityscape at an exhilarating 322kph. As you zip past cherry blossom trees and catch glimpses of Mount Fuji in the distance, this game masterfully integrates iconic cultural elements with high-speed action, emulating the thrilling experience of classic arcade games.
Yoshida, famous for his soft color palettes and whimsical sketches, recently discussed the importance of this project in an interview with TopMob. He shared, “It’s a joy for me to collaborate with others and experiment with different art forms, and since I was born in Japan, this project holds a special meaning… The retro 8-bit aesthetic was ideal for showcasing Japanese culture, such as the cherry blossoms — and I believe gamers will enjoy racing at 322kph on it.
Participants have the chance to battle it out for first place on the leaderboard, going head-to-head against Nissan Formula E drivers Oliver Rowland and Norman Nato, who are anticipated to earn high scores. A retro video game trailer merges gameplay with actual race clips, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that’s sure to please fans of the 90s.
Tommaso Volpe, managing director and team principal of the Nissan Formula E Team, stated, “By creating the NISMO Electric Racer Tokyo, we’ve produced an entity that embodies our dynamic track presence, while also paying tribute to Tokyo’s renowned gaming scene.
Besides the main event, fans can also look forward to unexpected showings of Yoshida’s artworks during the Tokyo E-Prix weekend.
