Nike honors baseball icon Jackie Robinson through a unique version of their Cortez shoe. This special edition, available for “Jackie Robinson Day”, features a white leather base and beige suede accents at the heel, toebox, and eyelets. The design also incorporates red stitching on the heel that mimics the threads of a baseball.
The shiny chrome accents highlight the black leather panel design, which also includes a tribute to Robinson’s jersey number 42. This tribute is found on the chrome tag on the tongue, stamped heels, and insole, where it appears in the style used by all MLB teams, as this jersey number has been retired by every franchise. The shoe, which serves both lifestyle and running purposes, sits atop a striped white midsole and herringbone outsole. To complete the design, white laces with silver aglets have been used.
I’m reminiscing about Jackie Robinson, a game-changer who stepped onto the field as first baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. His presence marked the end of racial segregation in the Major League Baseball (MLB). Over the next decade, he proved his mettle in the league and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962. Sadly, he passed away due to a heart attack in October 1972. Every April 15th, we honor his legacy as Jackie Robinson Day.
