Nubya Garcia Stopped By NPR’s Tiny Desk

Saxophonist Nubya Garcia, hailing from London, is currently traversing the United States on an extensive tour. However, she made time to visit the NPR offices for a fresh episode of the well-liked Tiny Desk series. Joined by her longtime collaborators Sam Jones (drummer) and Lyle Barton (keys), along with a string section, Garcia performed selections from her latest album Odyssey, as a fragrant incense stick of her personal blend burned nearby.

During their approximately 23-minute set, Garcia’s band kicked off with their traditional opener “Dawn,” followed by a faster pace with “Solstice” and proceeding to “Clarity” and the main theme “Odyssey.” For the closing act, Garcia selected “Triumphance” – her first composition that she wrote lyrics for – providing an entrancing blend of spoken-word phrases with saxophone rhythms.

Despite this being Garcia’s debut at NPR’s studios, it wasn’t her first time on Tiny Desk. Instead, she performed in the Tiny Desk (Home) series during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In place of the usual studio setting, she played from a plant-filled houseboat in London, showcasing songs from her album Source.
