Shoot Your Shot is an excellent hockey romance by Lexi LaFleur Brown

Hockey romance novels rank among the most popular and adored subcategories within the genre. This could be because of the allure of the sport itself, the intriguing concept of a rugged athlete having tender feelings, or simply the charm of a romantic tale set in the world of sports.

Given the circumstances, it was an obvious choice for me to delve into and critique “Shoot Your Shot” by Lexi LaFleur Brown. For the uninitiated, she’s not just married to a retired hockey player, but she also commands attention as a sassy social media sensation on Instagram.

If you discovered her through her Instagram posts or learned about her from this book, chances are you’re either already among her followers or curious about her activities. Given that context, the book caught my attention right away due to her unique insights into the world of hockey.

As a fortunate reader, I’m expressing my heartfelt gratitude to Canary Street Press for providing me with an advance reading copy (ARC). This generosity enabled me to delve into the book earlier than usual, and I must say, it turned out to be a delightful read.

Shoot Your Shot is an incredible hockey romance debut.

Titled “Take Your Chance“, the story follows Lucy, a charmingly disorganized individual, as she navigates life’s turbulent waters. Flitting from one relationship to another, lacking a clear career path, and simply living in the moment, Lucy’s life takes an unexpected turn when she crosses paths with Jaylen Jones, who, initially, escapes her recognition.

One night of intense emotion passes between them, but the next day, it appears their connection has ended. Yet, JJ receives word that he’s bound for Seattle – the place where they first crossed paths. Overjoyed by this positive development after meeting Lucy, JJ becomes resolved to track her down and make her his talisman of good fortune. Although it may seem peculiar, athletes like JJ place great importance on such matters.

Initially, Lucy shows some reluctance, but eventually gives in, leading to them exchanging texts, spending quality time, and making plans to meet up. It’s evident from the beginning that JJ has strong feelings for Lucy, which is not unexpected given her circumstances. What makes these two intriguing is their distinct past traumas and how they influence their choices.

In a remarkably realistic manner, LaFleur Brown’s character development left an impression on me as if I were personally acquainted with JJ and Lucy. They seemed so lifelike, it felt as though I could invite them for a casual chat over coffee – perhaps even spending time together outside the pages of the book. This might just be my imagination running wild, but I found myself deeply fond of these characters.

The third act’s conflict wasn’t my favorite part, as it felt somewhat perplexing in its resolution. However, I found the overall story to be engaging, and it left me eagerly anticipating more works by Lexi LaFleur Brown.
