House of Finn Juhl Unveils the Reissued Extended Wall Sofa Aubertin at Museum Jorn

The iconic Aubertin Wall Sofa, initially crafted by Finn Juhl in 1951 for timber entrepreneur W. F. Aubertin, is now returning to the market under the auspices of Finn Juhl’s House at the revitalized Museum Jorn in Silkeborg, Denmark.

Stepping into this freshly reimagined gallery space at the museum, I find myself surrounded by works from the esteemed Finn Juhl, such as the iconic Ross Coffee Table, Fireplace Chair, and Panel System, all nestled comfortably together. Even an exquisite sculpture by Sigurjón Ólafsson graces this room. This gallery embodies the democratic spirit of making art and craftsmanship a universal experience, mirroring the vision of celebrated Danish artist Asger Jorn.

The Wall Sofa, a remarkable masterpiece of innovative Danish design, has been showcased permanently at the National Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Trondheim, Norway, since 1952. In that year, art historian and museum director Thorvald Krohn-Hansen requested Finn Juhl to create an exhibition area for modern furniture and crafts. This led to the design of the organically shaped sofa, which mirrors Juhl’s passion for modern abstract art and his ambition to instill a feeling of motion in his creations. While Juhl utilized the Wall Sofa in numerous interior designs, the extended version has not been consistently produced since then.

Currently, the Wall Sofa Aubertin is being reintroduced at Museum Jorn in a special area designed to echo the room found at the National Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Trondheim. This space will showcase a similar color palette, decor, and artwork to pay tribute to his heritage. The custom-made, fully upholstered sofa can comfortably seat six individuals and boasts an asymmetrical backrest and seat that seem to float on nearly invisible framing.
