Zaha Hadid Architects Unveils Plans for the Center of Mediterranean Culture

The coastal city of Reggio Calabria, situated strategically in southern Italy with breathtaking vistas of Sicily and excellent sightlines, is preparing to unveil a fresh cultural icon: the Center for Mediterranean Culture.

Constructed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), this location boasts a 24,000 square meter expanse, hosting a variety of facilities such as exhibition halls, an aquarium, versatile conference rooms, an auditorium, and educational spaces for nearby schools. For the convenience of visitors, there will be a bookstore and a restaurant & bar offering stunning views of the scenic harbor.

Located where ancient trade roads meet thriving marine habitats, Reggio Calabria has historically functioned as a bridge connecting the eastern and western regions of the Mediterranean. The expansive upcoming site aims to delve into the city’s profound ties with the Mediterranean Sea, while also enhancing its existing archaeological and art museums.

Highlighting eco-friendliness, this establishment additionally adopts tactics adapted to regional weather patterns, resource conservation, and environmental improvement. The exterior, constructed from locally obtained marine-quality anodized aluminum sheets, lessens solar heat absorption and promotes lasting energy efficiency.

The Reggium Waterfront renovation project not only tackles the long-term issues of pollution and coastal erosion along the city’s coastline but also improves overall access to this notable stretch of the seashore, making it more convenient for everyone.

The construction process for the Mediterranean Culture Center has recently commenced, and as of now, there hasn’t been any announcement regarding the projected completion date.
