Rarely do Alexander McQueen archive pieces make an appearance, but when they do, it’s quite appropriate to exhibit them alongside modern and contemporary art masterpieces. This unique display is happening at The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina, in collaboration with Barrett Barrera Projects. Titled “Statement Pieces: Modern Fashion Design vs. The Gibbes Collection,” this exhibition creates a visual dialogue between fashion and fine art.
In an email to Artnet, Sara Arnold, the director of curatorial affairs at The Gibbes Museum, stated: “The exhibit provides a chance for us to reconsider our collection and introduce top-tier fashion design into our gallery spaces.
As a fashion enthusiast, I’m utterly thrilled to be part of this exhibit that showcases an eclectic mix of iconic designers such as Alexander McQueen, COMME des GARÇONS, Gucci, Dapper Dan, and many others. The ambiance is beautifully set with these timeless pieces contrasted against the backdrop of the Gibbes’ permanent collection, which ranges from classical 18th-century artworks to cutting-edge contemporary mixed media art of today.
In many instances, the archival clothing pieces harmonize well with the artworks they’re associated with, even though there isn’t a direct rule dictating this relationship. For example, Dapper Dan’s style mirrors Barkley Hendricks’ work, Alexander McQueen SS09 contrasts beautifully with Thomas Sully’s portrait, and a COMME des GARÇONS ensemble fits perfectly with Donte K. Hayes’ sculpture.
The Gibbes Museum of Art is showcasing ‘Statement Pieces’ from today up until April 27th. You can purchase tickets both online or in person.
