As a gamer, I was all set to immerse myself in the digital art world at Hong Kong’s 2025 Digital Art Fair, but alas! An announcement on Instagram last Sunday left me disappointed as the event has been called off. The organizers mentioned “circumstances beyond their control” as the reason, but later, government officials revealed that they couldn’t secure enough funding to pull it off.
On Monday, the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Bureau of Hong Kong released a statement saying that although the fair had requested financial support from the Mega Arts and Cultural Events Fund, which is a government program designed to enhance Hong Kong as a “crossroads” for global cultural interactions between East and West.
Yet, the application was found to be insufficient in providing necessary details for evaluating its artistic qualities, tourist appeal, and potential economic advantages. Regrettably, when the application arrived, all the tickets had already been distributed.
Debuted in 2021, Digital Art Fair was recognized globally as the first art fair dedicated to Web 3.0, specializing in the development and acquisition of NFT (Non-Fungible Token) artwork. The upcoming event was planned for the West Kowloon Cultural District from March 26 to 30, aligning with other art events during Hong Kong Art Week, including Art Basel and Arts Central, which are supported by the culture fund of the tourism board.
This marks the third significant cancellation from Hong Kong’s artistic and cultural schedule, including the electronic music festival Creamfields, Photofairs, and another digital art event – Digital Art Fair. With the announcement being made only a month before its scheduled start date, the organizers of Digital Art Fair have assured that all ticket holders will receive a complete refund.
