Nicole McLaughlin and Vans Fuse Retro Hiking Details Into the Slip-On RS

Vans and designer Nicole McLaughlin have teamed up again for a second project, pushing her upcycling expertise to greater heights. This time around, they’ve added tactical elements and expanded upon the Slip-On RS model, incorporating matching accessories. McLaughlin presents an innovative yet practical interpretation of Vans’ iconic shoe design.

Modeling after the aesthetic of classic hiking backpacks, the design features a spacious pocket situated above the toe area and adjustable nylon straps. The fun-filled promotional material emphasizes the intricate aspects of the design, showcasing miniature versions of McLaughlin’s studio and various hiking equipment as well.

In her recent design for Vans, McLaughlin expressed that she aims to create versatile yet playful items. She drew inspiration for this collection from retro ’70s hiking backpacks and the overall look of outdoor equipment from that time period.

The Slip-On RS not only captures visual appeal but also embodies its hiking-inspired essence. It boasts uppers made from 40% recycled canvas, water-resistant and free of PFCs, plus DWR treatment. The outsole sports a lugged pattern that ensures grip on various terrains. Available in a natural monochrome canvas colorway and a charcoal duo-tone with black accents, it features vintage co-branded details such as a Vans N.M. Rucksack patch on the storage pouch and wordmarks on the insoles. The collection extends practicality to accessories, offering ankle socks with pockets and a versatile Rucksack that can be used as a climbing chalk bag too.

McLaughlin’s new Slip-On RS shoe is an extension of her reputation for creatively reusing clothing and adding playful design elements. Starting from the collaboration with Vans on the simpler Slip-On VP VR3 LX in 2023, McLaughlin has since teamed up with brands like Merrell, HOKA, and most recently, PUMA on various projects. Additionally, she has crafted numerous DIY, one-of-a-kind pieces such as a jacket made from PUMA goalkeeper gloves and a stool constructed using old JanSport backpacks.

The new collaboration between Vans and Nicole McLaughlin will be available for purchase on Nicole McLaughlin’s online shop on Wednesday, February 26. Starting from Thursday, February 27, the collection will also be accessible on the Vans website and at certain retail locations.
