Amazon, in partnership with Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, has established a collaborative production company to manage the upcoming James Bond intellectual properties. This joint endeavor grants Amazon’s MGM Studios exclusive creative authority over the iconic 007 series. Yet, all parties will maintain equal ownership rights in this venture.
Speaking officially, Mike Hopkins, who leads Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, expressed his gratitude. For more than six decades, James Bond has been a highly influential character in the film industry. He acknowledged the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for initially bringing James Bond to cinemas worldwide. Additionally, he praised Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their steadfast commitment and role in maintaining the global franchise’s beloved legacy. Hopkins is excited to preserve this cherished tradition and eagerly anticipates introducing a new era of the iconic 007 character to audiences around the globe.
According to Deadline, Amazon has increased its investment by an extra $1 billion USD in MGM Studios, thereby securing complete creative control over the studio following the decision of Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to step down from their supervisory positions. Initially, Amazon had paid more than anticipated for MGM, shelling out $8.5 billion USD for a studio valued between $3.4 to $4 billion USD. This overpayment was made with the aim of gaining access to the highly profitable James Bond franchise. However, due to Broccoli and Wilson’s ownership stake, Amazon could not fully exploit the 007 franchise. To remedy this, an additional sum of $1 billion USD was added to facilitate full creative control.
At the moment, it’s unclear which specific aspects are involved in the $1 billion USD deal, but it aligns with Amazon’s ambition to establish itself as a global distributor for movies by 2026. Back when Bond was under the control of Broccoli and Wilson, filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan have shown interest in contributing their unique style to the Bond series.
