The freshly launched DC Universe is now full-steam ahead with director James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, and fans can’t help but speculate which iconic DC Comics characters will inhabit this new world. During a special Q&A at FAN EXPO Denver, Grant Gustin was asked by a fan what character he would like to portray if cast in James Gunn’s DCU, to which the DC TV star promptly replied “The Flash.” This information comes from ScreenRant.
Suppose James Gunn were casting characters for the DC Universe, which role would you prefer to portray?” (Answer: Flash)

You might be wondering how it could possibly happen, given that the Arrowverse has ended and had a successful run for many seasons. However, six shows running for multiple seasons is no small feat. Regarding DC’s Flash character in Gunn’s DC Universe, it will likely feature a new actor, despite Gunn’s admiration for Gustin’s portrayal. But what if we could have the best of both worlds? The solution might be found in DC Comics’ rich history.
After nine seasons of “The Flash” on The CW and three performances in the DC Universe by Barry Allen, it’s fair to say that his portrayal of the Flash is becoming familiar. Yet, the new DC Universe requires a Flash character. Given the significant role of the Flash within the broader DC Comics lore, it would be imprudent for DC Studios not to include one. However, I believe Wally West should take over as the Flash instead of Barry Allen. This is because Wally’s character development depends on Barry Allen having previously been the Flash and his crime-fighting partner, Kid Flash. When Barry sacrifices himself heroically, it’s Wally who assumes the role of the Flash at a young age.
It seems unlikely that DC Studios is eager to release another Flash movie so quickly following its poor performance at the box office in 2023. Instead, they might consider developing a Flash series for HBO Max within the DC Universe, with Wally taking on the role of the Flash this time around. This strategy mirrors their approach to the Green Lantern franchise, as audiences may be hesitant about another Green Lantern film after the 2011 movie starring Ryan Reynolds. Moreover, indications suggest that the eventual DCU Justice League will draw inspiration from the animated version, where Wally West was a key member of the Flash team.
If Wally becomes the Flash in this universe, it implies that Barry Allen must also exist here. Given the rich 300-year history of this DCU, it seems logical for Barry to make an appearance, even if only briefly. Since the audience is familiar with Grant Gustin’s portrayal of Barry, why not incorporate him into the story? He wouldn’t be an exact replica of the Arrowverse Barry, but more like a variant, following Marvel’s terminology.
Perhaps to distinguish him, they might consider making him blonde, similar to his comic book counterpart. Casting Gustin would instantly create a bond with viewers for this Barry Allen. Moreover, it would amplify the impact of his potential demise. When The Flash joins the DCU, adopting this approach could be advantageous, according to Gunn’s perspective.
