Starting off, let me clarify that this discussion isn’t about politics, but rather about music. I personally don’t have an opinion on President Donald Trump or his non-music ideas. However, recent actions by the president have impacted one musician directly – Ben Folds.
In a previous role, Folds served as an artistic consultant for the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO). Notably, the NSO’s primary performance venue is the Kennedy Center. Given that the president has decided to assume control over the Kennedy Center due to disliking numerous performances there, it seems reasonable to infer that Folds did not support Trump in his presidential bid.
As a dedicated admirer, I must express my surprise upon learning that on Wednesday, the board of the Kennedy Center elected Donald Trump as its chair. Granted, one could presume that the President of the United States has more pressing matters to attend to than managing the Kennedy Center. However, it seems that this assumption may not hold true in this instance. It’s intriguing how government intervention is becoming increasingly prevalent in various aspects of life, a situation that ironically contradicts the usual conservative preference for less government involvement.
In theory.
Donald Trump’s decision to be chair at the Kennedy Center has ramifications for Ben Folds
Folds decided to step down as an advisor after Trump became chair.
Last week, Trump expressed via his social media platform that under his guidance, efforts will be made to transform the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., back to greatness, similar to his “Make America Great Again” slogan.
If you didn’t realize that the Kennedy Center, which is named after former Democratic president John F. Kennedy, receives government funding, now you know. It’s unfortunate that the arts and music often find themselves subject to political influence. Regardless of one’s political leanings, a musician like Ted Nugent has an equal right to express their views as someone like John Mellencamp, who may be perceived as leaning more towards the left.
The charm of music and art lies in the fact that individuals have the autonomy to decide on their own actions, primarily guided by their inner feelings. This freedom is influenced, at times, by record labels too. Fortunately, we live in a country like the U.S., where we can freely express these choices.
The most concerning aspect of Trump’s decision regarding the Kennedy Center lies in its potential impact on its operations. This could lead to reduced artistic autonomy, a prospect that feels quite daunting. To put it simply, this would not be desirable even if a past president like Joe Biden were to assume control of the Kennedy Center. After all, presidents have more pressing matters to attend to, don’t they? But isn’t art something far too valuable to be overlooked or neglected?
Ben Folds, like any other artist, is entitled to withdraw from his commitment to the Kennedy Center following recent developments. Similarly, any musician who chooses not to play there after the events involving Trump would also be exercising their right. It’s plausible that such artists might not receive an invitation to perform in the future, though.
