1964 saw The Beatles clinch their inaugural Grammy for Best Performance by a Vocal Group (for “A Hard Day’s Night”) and Best New Artist, marking the start of seven wins and 25 nominations with the Academy. Fast-forward nearly five decades, and in 2025, The Beatles are once again in the running for a Grammy: Record of the Year.
It faces tough rivals, such as Beyonce’s “Texas Hold ‘Em,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” which Trent Reznor named his song of the year at this year’s Golden Globes, and popular tracks by Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, and Chappell Roan. However, there’s still a possibility for success!
Originally penned by John Lennon in ballad form around 1977, the song “Now and Then” was initially intended for release as a single on the Anthology of 1980, following Lennon’s demise. However, this didn’t come to fruition.
With new technology, the Beatles were able to bring an old song to life
> In the late ’90s, I found myself among the surviving Beatles, eager to bring their music back to life. However, we hit a snag with one of John’s tracks; the background noise on his vocal seemed excessive. There were rumors that it was his television interfering with the mix.
About three decades following George’s demise, with the rest of the Beatles still active, it wasn’t until Peter Jackson’s 2021 documentary “The Beatles: Get Back” that they gained access to advanced technology for audio restoration. This technology allowed them to separate tracks, providing an opportunity for their single to compete effectively.
In October of 2023, the Beatles, with George’s vintage ’90s guitar recording, Paul on bass, a slide guitar reminiscent of Harrison, backing vocals, string arrangements, and Ringo on drums, finally unveiled their song “Now and Then.
One of the two notes Yoko Ono handed to McCartney bore the inscription “For Paul.” This tender message, penned by a friend who had drifted apart, reads: “From time to time/I yearn for you/Oh, from time to time/I wish you were here/Always come back to me.
Paul and Ringo’s heartfelt feelings towards their late bandmates encapsulate a poignant tribute to their enduring friendship. This touching message was published as a standalone record, with “Love Me Do,” their first hit single, on the opposite side, symbolizing their extended history as one of rock and roll’s most cherished groups.
Independent of whether it wins the Grammy for Album of the Year, the release serves as a tribute to the strength and timelessness of contemporary music’s groundbreakers, their lasting bond, and the continued adoration fans have for the Beatles.
