As a dedicated Mos Def/Yasiin Bey fan with over two decades of his music shaping my playlists and life soundtrack, this “Money Christmas” announcement has me beyond excited! The man knows how to keep us guessing and the anticipation is always worth it. His unique approach to releasing music, avoiding traditional labels and streaming platforms, makes each release feel like a special event. And let’s not forget the genius collaboration with Anuar Khalifi on the cover art – Osanta Bin Lyin, what a masterpiece!
Christmas will come 10 days early for Yasiin Bey fans.
On December 15, the rapper from Brooklyn, commonly recognized as Mos Def, has revealed plans for a livestream show titled “Money Christmas.” To witness this event, fans should visit his Bandcamp page and pay $7.99. The newly performed songs will become available for purchase approximately one to two days following the performance. Additionally, vinyl records and merchandise will be up for sale.
Bey shared the news about this project on Instagram and credited artist Anuar Khalifi for creating its artwork. The artwork, titled “Osanta Bin Lyin,” depicts Osama bin Laden in a Santa Claus outfit.
Beyoncé’s most recent album, titled “Negus“, was exclusively played at a listening installation in the Brooklyn Museum in 2019. This project wasn’t made available on streaming platforms or for purchase. Prior to that, she released the critically acclaimed LP, “The Ecstatic ” in 2009, which features the unique and cool single, “Casa Bey.
In addition, the rapper teamed up with Talib Kweli once more to produce an album under Black Star titled “No Fear of Time” in 2022, which was exclusively available on the podcast network Luminary. It seems Beyoncé has chosen to bypass traditional record labels and streaming services such as Spotify for future project releases.
Previously, the resident of Brooklyn gained attention beyond his 2022 Black Star album release and the ensuing months; this was when he labeled Drake as a pop artist rather than a hip-hop artist in January this year. Furthermore, he criticized Drake’s music for having too commercial a sound.
Beyonce expressed on The Cutting Room Floor podcast that Drake’s music seems to fit her shopping experiences, particularly in places like Target in Houston. She described it as being “edgy” and compatible with shopping, likening it to browsing through an array of products in a mall, finding them appealing and enjoying the variety. In other words, she finds Drake’s music enjoyable and fitting for certain shopping situations.
