As a die-hard Depeche Mode fan since the days of ‘Speak & Spell’, it’s hard not to feel a twinge of melancholy reading about the potential end of their musical journey. I’ve been following them through thick and thin, from cassette tapes to streaming services, and seeing them live more times than I can count on my fingers.
After 43 years, it might be time to call it a day. In 1981, Depeche Mode debuted their first full-length album, Speak & Spell, and since then, they’ve released an impressive 14 more studio albums. They’ve had numerous top-20 hits in the US and UK, and their live performances continue to impress. However, all bands eventually reach a point where they stop producing music.
One unique aspect of Depeche Mode, unlike many other bands spanning four decades, lies in the fact that Dave Gahan and Martin Gore continue to produce fresh, exciting music. Granted, it’s not frequently released – they typically launch a new album every four years, starting from 1993’s Songs of Faith and Devotion, followed by 2017’s Spirit. There was a six-year gap between Spirit and the latest release in 2023, titled Memento Mori. However, one may wonder if we can anticipate any more music from Depeche Mode in the future.
It appears that in a recent chat with NME, Gahan mentioned he spoke with Gore during a shared trip to renew a friend’s vows. Unfortunately, their conversation didn’t lead to any studio plans being discussed. As for Gore, the band’s primary songwriter since 1982’s “A Broken Frame,” there’s no indication that he has begun work on new songs yet.
Dave Gahan pushes pause on any hope for a Depeche Mode album coming out any time soon
Gahan shared that Martin and he have had a chat recently, during which they met up and enjoyed each other’s company. Their rendezvous took place in Italy, where Anton Cobijn and his wife were reaffirming their marriage vows in a beautiful location near Rome. The gathering was relaxed, free of work or performance obligations. Gahan even asked Martin if he had been writing, to which Martin replied in the negative.
In recent developments, there’s some good news for Depeche Mode fans. For the past three decades, the band has essentially been a threesome consisting of Gahan, Gore, and Andrew Fletcher. Unfortunately, Fletcher passed away in 2022. Moving forward, if Depeche Mode plans to create new music, it will only be down to the decisions of Gahan and Gore. This means there are now fewer people involved in deciding the band’s future, as early long-time member Alan Wilder parted ways with the group back in 1995.
Frequent album releases every four years or so by the band gives fans a sense of security, knowing they could be waiting for a new record. However, if no new album arrives by 2028, it might cause fans to worry. Considering that both Gahan and Gore would be in their late sixties by then, they may decide they’ve had enough and choose to retire.
Gahan implied there was a glimmer of optimism. He stated, “(The gap between new albums) is usual – particularly when you’ve been working tirelessly for a couple of years. It requires time. Be patient and observe. I wouldn’t completely dismiss the possibility of us reuniting someday, but it’s not an immediate prospect at the moment.
