Four underrated Foreigner songs worth multiple listens

As a lifelong rock enthusiast with a soft spot for the 70s and 80s, I must admit that Foreigner has always held a special place in my heart. Their hits were anthems of my youth, but it’s their lesser-known gems that have me reminiscing about those days.

Along the journey, there were some undiscovered treasures tucked away. Interestingly enough, several of the band’s subsequent chart-toppers actually overshadowed some fantastic B-side tracks. For those who are die-hard rock enthusiasts, they might have dismissed the band initially. However, the tracks that come next could draw them back in again.

Could it be that Foreigner deserves enshrining in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? There’s certainly an argument to be made, given that they were inducted this year. Here are some of their tracks that lend credence to the claim.

4 underrated Foreigner songs you are missing out on

“Long, Long Way from Home”

Typically, such a song wouldn’t be released until later in a band’s career. Upon reflection, the overall theme comes across as somewhat bold. Lou Gramm wrote this song to express his struggles while living in New York City after leaving his hometown of Rochester and achieving some level of success.

Prior to achieving the fame they eventually did, Foreigner’s first album wasn’t yet their claim to stardom. However, when reminiscing about their past, it’s unlikely they would focus on their debut album. Instead, this song serves as a powerful tribute to the essence of rock music. The intensity and assurance displayed are truly remarkable.

“Dirty White Boy”

This song by the band is often overlooked compared to hits like “Waiting for a Girl Like You”. However, “Dirty White Boy” stands out as a gritty rock track that remains impressive even after many years since its release. Despite being inspired by Elvis Presley, it’s worth appreciating this song on its own merits without making direct comparisons.

As a gamer, I can tell you this: It’s for the best if you hadn’t known about this fast-paced soundalike, because Elvis Presley wouldn’t have produced anything like it. Fortunately, Foreigner, at their finest, certainly did!

“Woman in Black”

The issue with this song lies in its placement on the band’s top-selling original studio album (while “Records” outperformed “4”, it was a compilation), and the fact that this record generated numerous major hits like “Urgent,” “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” and “Juke Box Hero.” However, “Woman in Black” seemed a bit too somber to resonate with their wide fanbase.

Still, this funk-rock hummer is worth multiple listens. The chorus almost – almost – resembles a current Ghost song. It’s bleak, but fun.

“Fool for You Anyway”

Talking about songs with a melancholic vibe, this mid-tempo rock number revolves around someone whose partner has been unfaithful, yet they continue to harbor feelings for them. One could exclaim to the singer, “Show some dignity!” However, I’d advise you to give it a listen and appreciate its beauty instead.

This song may not be as enjoyable as the other three, but it still provides a sense of satisfaction. In fact, you might experience a sense of release or emotional relief from listening to this track.
