As a long-time follower of hip-hop and a resident of California, I can confidently say that the recent releases from Kendrick Lamar and Ab-Soul have truly been a breath of fresh air. The synergy between these two artists is undeniable, and their mutual respect for each other shines through in their music.
Man, I’ve gotta say, I’m absolutely blown away by Kendrick Lamar’s latest album, GNX. Not only is it getting rave reviews all over, but it’s also dominating the charts! Five tracks from the album made it to the top five on Billboard’s Hot 100, and to add to that, two other songs from the same album even managed to sneak into the top ten. As a fellow music lover and gamer, this is some serious chart-topping, record-breaking stuff!
A specific track generating much conversation is “heart pt. 6,” in which Kendrick looks back on his journey with Top Dawg Entertainment and the Black Hippy collective. This group includes Kendrick, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, and Ab-Soul. Kendrick acknowledges that Ab-Soul played a significant role in molding his rapping style.
In one corner, Ab-Soul is softly reciting rhymes, handling Black & Mild cigars haphazardly, slowly breaking apart weed until he grins, his words renowned enough to make me envy his skill with lyrics. I’ve attempted to mimic his style, hoping it would refine my own writing.” Kendrick expresses.
Recently, Ab discussed the Instagram Live post about the ‘heart part 6’ and shared his feelings towards Kendrick. In his words, “Let me elaborate on something. Everyone seems to be discussing the ‘heart part 6’, right? Well, I feel extremely honored by this. You see, he’s not just a colleague for me, but a true brother in life… To put it simply, I’d stand ready to protect him.
However, the rapper hailing from Carson, California expressed that he absorbed just as much knowledge from Kendrick Lamar as Kendrick learned from him, particularly in the realm of the music industry. In essence, he asserted that Kendrick may not have scrutinized him as deeply as he studied Kendrick. Essentially, Kendrick was his mentor, imparting the most valuable insights to him as a professional recording artist, according to Ab.
At the same time, Ab boasts a fresh album of impressive power. This work is called Soul Burger, which hit the shelves on November 8th. It’s an emotional tribute to his deceased friend, Armon “DoeBurger” Stringer, who tragically lost his life during a home invasion in 2021.
