At present, Matlock is touring across the UK and has expressed his aspiration to surpass his punk background, blending genres such as doo-wop into his solo projects (it’s worth noting that even though punk band The Ramones occasionally incorporated doo-wop elements, there’s always been a connection between punk and doo-wop music).

His live shows take him to cities like London, Leeds, and Belfast, and he’s even expanded his tour to Los Angeles. This diverse tour schedule reflects his ambition to be recognized not only as the Sex Pistols’ bassist but also as a versatile musician and composer, whose focus is on creating great music rather than confining himself to one genre.

In a recent chat, Matlock shared his thoughts on his past with The Sex Pistols and his complex emotions towards the band’s enduring impact. He criticized the 2022 biopic “Pistol,” based on guitarist Steve Jones’ memoir, as excessively sensationalized. He also regretted the cultural glamorization of Sid Vicious, who took over from him in 1977. Vicious, Matlock pointed out, frequently overshadows the more substantial contributions made by the band during their earlier phase, with Vicious often seen as embodying the stereotype of punk’s dark, decadent, and nihilistic aspects, as one of Vicious’ friends explained.

During the latest revival tour of the band, Matlock played alongside founding members Paul Cook and Steve Jones. Frank Carter took over for John Lydon as the lead vocalist. In this tour, Matlock openly expressed his disappointment and doubt about Lydon’s authenticity in upholding his rebellious persona, given Lydon’s controversial backing of Donald Trump. Despite acknowledging Lydon’s gift with words during their collaborations, Matlock questioned whether Lydon’s lyrics – like “God Save the Queen” – genuinely represented his personal beliefs or were expressions of a theatrical uprising.

It’s intriguing to know that Matlock was invited to join Oasis, an offer he declined. He jokingly dismissed the Britpop legends who made “Wonderwall” famous as ‘boring’, revealing a mix of wit and frankness in discussing his professional journey.

Beyond his individual projects, Matlock has also joined forces with Blondie on their latest album. This partnership offered him the opportunity to delve into complex, discordant tones and heavy sounds, reinforcing his versatility and dedication to artistic growth.
