As a die-hard Alien fan with a heart pounding like the iconic chestburster scene, I can hardly contain my excitement over Fede Álvarez’s commitment to delivering a worthy sequel to the sci-fi horror masterpiece that was Alien: Romulus. Having grown up on a steady diet of Ridley Scott’s original Alien and its subsequent installments, I can appreciate the care and caution that Álvarez is taking to ensure any follow-up lives up to the franchise’s legacy.
Fede Álvarez, director of Alien: Romulus, recently talked about possible plans for a sequel, hinting that any future movie in this series is likely still quite some time away. Despite their eagerness to explore more within the Alien universe, both Álvarez and 20th Century Studios agree that moving ahead will only happen once they have a well-developed story idea.
Alvarez, along with his co-writer Rodo Sayagues, are brainstorming ideas for what could become an excellent follow-up to the successful sci-fi horror film. Alvarez emphasized that the team is committed to producing a sequel that maintains the franchise’s high standards, and he shared that they will move forward only after coming up with a concept fitting enough to carry the Alien name.
In conversation with IO9 regarding the sequel, he expressed, “Absolutely, we’re keen to make it. The studio is on board too. I’m excited about it. With sequels, it’s all about discovering a compelling story.” He added, “Rodo and I have some concepts, but we only dive in when we find something that feels like a film worth creating.” The director ended by mentioning they are actively searching for a plot that merits everyone’s attention and the title of the potential movie.
He warned against making a sequel merely because the first film did well and emphasized the need to come up with a meaningful sequel. He added, “Otherwise, you never want to fall into the mistake of making [a sequel] just because the first one is a big hit; just because you can make it, that’s always a recipe for disaster.”
In August, the film Alien: Romulus generated a staggering USD 350.8 million globally, surpassed only by Prometheus from 2012 within the series, given its production budget of USD 80 million. Critics praised it highly too. With such a successful box office run, 20th Century Studios declared in October that Álvarez would be back to direct a sequel. Stay tuned for more news on this exciting development!
Alien: Romulus is now streaming on Hulu and will be available on VHS by December 3rd, 2024.
