Directing Legend Francis Ford Coppola Suggests That We Simply Did Not Get ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’: “Todd Phillips (…) he’s always one step ahead of the audience.”

As a seasoned cinephile who has seen my fair share of cinematic masterpieces and disasters alike, I must confess that I find the recent developments surrounding Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis and Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux rather intriguing.

At present, cinema-goers have the opportunity to watch two films sparking much debate – one being Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, and the other Todd Phillips’ Joker: Part Two. These movies possess unique qualities, yet they are struggling with both audiences and critics at the box office. However, there seems to be an intriguing connection between them that piques interest.

To put it simply, both films were highly anticipated. “Megalopolis” was expected to mark Coppola’s triumphant comeback, a project he had been striving to bring to life for decades. On the other hand, Phillips’ film was a follow-up to one of the greatest comic book movies ever made.

Although both films have received a lot of attention, they have fallen short in every possible aspect: “Megalopolis” has been labeled as an unstructured and confusing disaster, while “Joker: Folie à Deux” is seen as a poorly written film that doesn’t live up to the legacy of its predecessor.

Despite the poor performance of the films, it’s quite surprising to see one director taking up the defense of another, making the tale all the more absurd.

In case you recall our previous accounts, Megalopolis is an ambitious science fiction saga that originated as early as 1979 during Francis Ford Coppola’s production of Apocalypse Now, a renowned war film.

Currently, it’s been 45 years since the release of this film, and now it’s available for viewing. However, we find ourselves at a loss as to how to evaluate this psychedelic production that attempts to captivate with its philosophical underpinnings and innovative style, yet falls short in almost every aspect.

Simultaneously, “Joker: Folie à Deux” was eagerly awaited as one of the highly anticipated sequels and films of the year. Its long-awaited debut occurred on October 4, 2024, much to the delight of fans. However, the premiere fell short of expectations for many who were hoping for a worthy successor to the original blockbuster film.

Furthermore, as previously mentioned, both films fell short of expectations, but it appears that Joker: Folie à Deux has one significant supporter, despite the fact that his actions in Megalopolis may not have been what the movie desired from a fan. To clarify, we are referring to Coppola himself, who expressed praise for Phillips’ film on Instagram.

If the link doesn’t work for you for any reason, here’s what Coppola wrote beneath the movie poster’s image:

@ToddPhillips films always amaze me and I enjoy them thoroughly. Ever since the wonderful “The Hangover” he’s always one step ahead of the audience never doing what they expect. Congratulations to Joker: Folie à Deux!

It’s equally gratifying to learn that the cinematographer, Lawrence Sher, cited “One From the Heart” as a visual inspiration for the movie.

Coppola implies that perhaps people haven’t fully grasped Phillips’ film, but given the general response and comments, this seems unlikely. Instead, it appears that Coppola’s own movie may have been misunderstood due to its poor execution, leaving little room for a proper understanding of the jumbled production.

This is why we cannot really understand what motivated this post, but we wanted to report on it and provide you with a very different perspective on things, which you can now debate.
