Michael Douglas has announced that he’s taking a break from acting, at least temporarily, and expressed deep concerns about America’s future. During an interview at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic, he made it clear that he’s distancing himself from Hollywood and questioning the state of American politics.
In town to share the refreshed adaptation of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” Douglas decided to disclose the reasons behind his absence from recent acting roles.
He shared with reporters at a press conference, as reported by Variety, that he hasn’t worked since 2022 intentionally because he felt it was necessary to take a break. He explained that after nearly 60 years of working tirelessly, he didn’t want to be one of those individuals who passed away on set.
I might not be fully out of the game yet, but something truly exceptional would need to lure me back in front of the camera. For now, I’m content at home enjoying life with my wonderful partner, Catherine Zeta-Jones. Jokingly, I’d say, ‘I’m more than happy to be her co-star at home!’
However, Douglas wasn’t limited to discussing films and matrimony. He also voiced his opinions extensively on the complex political situation in the United States. Whenever asked about contemporary American affairs, he was straightforward with his insights.
He stated that the country appears to be veering towards authoritarian rule. Politics today seem more about making money than serving the people. Money has become a crucial aspect of democracy, with many entering politics for financial gain. We once held a noble ideal in the U.S., an unwavering belief system, but that no longer seems to exist.
Douglas expressed his concern about the delicate nature of democracy, stating that it’s essential to recognize its fragility and the need to safeguard it. He admitted to feeling anxious himself, emphasizing that everyone has a role in preserving our democracy.
He avoided going into too much detail, saying, “the news speaks for itself.”
At the festival, Douglas wasn’t just contemplating politics; he also reminisced about “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” the iconic film he contributed to. It’s been close to half a century since this movie initially premiered at Karlovy Vary. The director Miloš Forman, who hailed from the Czech Republic, significantly contributed to the film becoming the masterpiece it is today.
Douglas remarked, “We arrived as the festival was getting underway, and it’s quite uncommon to be celebrating a film that’s half a century old. It feels like a privilege to return to this place, the very scene of Miloš’s upbringing, considering all he achieved.
I can’t help but echo Douglas’ sentiments about the exceptional strength of the Oscars that year. He highlighted some remarkable films such as “Dog Day Afternoon,” “Jaws,” “Barry Lyndon,” and “Nashville” which were all contenders for Best Picture in 1976. Intriguingly, he questioned whether in the last 20 years, we’ve seen anywhere close to that caliber of films.
At the festival, producer Paul Zaentz – nephew of the initial “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” producer Saul Zaentz – conversed with Douglas. They discussed ideas for a new television series adaptation of the original novel, this time focusing on Chief Bromden’s perspective. The first season would conclude with the demise of the Jack Nicholson character, while the second season would depict Chief’s journey post-escape.
Douglas openly discussed his struggle with advanced-stage throat cancer, a journey far from simple. In his words, “Cancer at stage 4 is no vacation.” He opted for chemotherapy and radiation treatments over surgery, which could have potentially removed a part of his jaw and impaired his speaking ability. For an actor, he explained, such a consequence would be restrictive.
At the moment, Douglas appears quite relaxed, taking things slow. He mentions having a smaller independent movie in the works, but aside from that, he doesn’t seem too eager to return to acting right away.
