‘I Earned That’: Jon B Is Not Happy With Chloe Bailey And Gunna Using His Samples Without Permission

As a devoted fan of Jon B’s timeless R&B tunes, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions hearing about this latest development. On one hand, it’s heartening to see his music being appreciated and sampled by new artists, much like how we all have been inspired by his classics. But on the other, it’s disheartening to know that he feels unacknowledged in these instances.

Jon B expresses disappointment when he sees new musicians using his music as inspiration. This topic was also mentioned earlier, with references to Chloe Bailey and Gunna in relation to the song “Someone to Love.”

During a recent episode of Can We Talk R&B?, Jon B discussed his 1997 hit track “They Don’t Know.” He then mentioned Chloe Bailey and Gunna’s 2022 song, “You & Me,” which, according to Jon B, borrows the lyrics for its hook and chorus, as well as a similar guitar riff.

In a show of his displeasure, the artist behind “Now I’m With You” voiced his opinion, saying he found it unbearable that the two artists released that particular song. He further expressed a desire that Bailey and Gunna hadn’t committed that error in judgment.

In addition, Jon B stated that the previously named artists did not request permission to utilize his samples. He further commented, “Let’s discuss that with Gunna… That’s a matter of business we need to address.”

Despite expressing some discomfort over being featured in Bailey and Gunna’s song, he noted that using his ’90s samples in modern tracks is a form of flattery to him.

Jon B went on to say that the team of producers and songwriters, including Tim and Bob, all hold similar sentiments. Meanwhile, the artist behind “Pretty Girl” made it clear, saying, “Everyone has their own path, and I’ve worked hard to claim mine – it’s mine, and I earned it.”

In simpler terms, Jon B explained further that since an artist creates a successful song, they own the rights to make decisions about it, and Jon B respects this ownership by neither using their work without permission nor compensating them unfairly for it.

Ever since H.E.R., the genius behind Can We Get Down, dropped those intriguing insights about their collaboration, “You & Me,” on that podcast, neither Chloe Bailey nor Gunna has uttered a word in response. As an ardent fan, I can’t help but wonder what they might be thinking!

On Valentine’s Day in 2022, it was significant for people to understand that this duo paid tribute to Jon B’s song. They incorporated a scene from a public phone booth, which is featured in the opening sequence of Jon B’s original music video.

Regarding Gunna’s current project, he put out his album titled “One of Wun” in May this very year. As for Bailey, she is set to debut her album called “Trouble in Paradise” on the 9th of August coming up.
