As a huge Elder Scrolls fan, I’ve been practically begging for news about The Elder Scrolls 6! There was a lot of talk that Bethesda might ditch their older Creation Engine and start fresh, but thankfully, that’s not happening. They’re sticking with it, which is a relief!
In a recent interview with Kinda Funny, Bethesda’s Todd Howard revealed that their upcoming RPG is being built using the same core technology as classic games like Skyrim, Oblivion, and Morrowind.
It’s misleading to claim the studio is still using the same technology it did twenty years ago. Bethesda has invested significant effort and money into evolving the original Gamebryo engine into their own Creation Engine, and it’s been substantially improved.
However, long-time fans of Bethesda games will quickly point out that technical issues have been a consistent problem in all of their titles.
Players still often point to issues like frequent loading screens between areas and unrealistic behavior from characters, and these same problems, among others, were present in the 2023 game Starfield.
Howard does point out that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be built on an updated version of the Creation Engine, which is what you’d expect. He explains they’ve been working on upgrading the engine used in Starfield – Creation Engine 2 – to Creation Engine 3, and that’s what will power Elder Scrolls 6 and future games.
Considering everything, we have no idea what improvements Bethesda has made, but their past performance makes us a bit skeptical. We don’t anticipate this new version of their engine will dramatically change the quality of their games.
Bethesda’s decision to stick with its current game engine is likely to remain a topic of debate. Some fans believe the engine is a key part of what defines a Bethesda game, and that’s understandable. However, many others would probably prefer to see the company adopt a more up-to-date technology.
What are your thoughts on the game engine Bethesda uses? What are you hoping to see in The Elder Scrolls 6, particularly with the potential updates to the Creation Engine in its third iteration? Please share your comments below, but take a moment to consider your response first!
