I became completely captivated when she joined forces with this other person to bring The Young Marrieds, a mesmerizing TV soap opera from the 1960s, to life. This enchanting journey introduced me to John Pascal, the brilliant mind behind the show’s storylines, who tragically passed away in 1981.
The birth of Sweet Valley High
In 1983, the beloved Sweet Valley High series by Francine Pascal was introduced. This narrative centers around identical twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield as they navigate life in the fictional town of Sweet Valley, which is reminiscent of an upscale Los Angeles suburb.
1. Initially, only Pascal penned the first twelve books, but afterward, other writers took charge in continuing the series.
In an interview with PEOPLE magazine back in 1988, I shared my perspective on Sweet Valley being the quintessential high school experience. At that stage of life, we’re all naive and unaware of the complexities that come with adulthood. Yet, those elements remain a part of us until the very end. The series expanded to include Sweet Valley Twins and Sweet Valley Junior High School, further capturing the unique essence of these formative years.

Legacy and impact
Before penning Sweet Valley High, Pascal had previously authored various books intended for adults. These included a factual narrative titled The Strange Case of Patty Hearst, as well as fictional works such as Save Johanna! and If Wishes Were Horses. She also ventured into young-adult fiction with titles like Hangin’ Out With Cici and My First Love & Other Mishaps.
