Netflix is continuing its push into the world of board games, even for those unfamiliar with the hobby. After acquiring the rights to Settlers of Catan last year, the streaming service is now developing a live-action movie based on the popular game Ticket to Ride. This continues Netflix’s plan to adapt best-selling board games—including those that popularized a European style of gameplay in America—into films, shows, and video games.
Okay, so this is huge news for board game fans like me! Netflix just bought the rights to Ticket to Ride – yeah, that super popular train game from 2004 that’s got a ton of different versions now. They’re turning it into a movie, which I’m really excited about. Ben Mekler and Chris Amick, who’ve worked on TopMob, are writing the script. A bunch of big names are producing, including people from Asmodee, Tannenbaum Company, and Megamix. And get this – the original game designer, Alan R. Moon, is even on board as an executive producer! It sounds like they’re really trying to do the game justice.
Details about the movie’s plot are still under wraps, but according to Deadline, the initial idea came from Mel McClelland of the Tannenbaum Company and McAuley Cahill of Megamix. They collaborated with Mekler and Amick to develop the concept entirely from the ground up. Fans of Ticket to Ride will be excited to know the story could take place anywhere, and isn’t limited to Europe or the United States. The game has already expanded to include locations around the world, and even different time periods.
We’ve been into board games for years, even before streaming was popular, so we’d actually be happy if the movie was simply about people playing Ticket to Ride on a train. It might not sound like a blockbuster, but just picture it! We can definitely see the appeal. In fact, if Netflix wanted to create a reality show based on the game, we’d be all for it.
