George Lazenby, who once donned the tuxedo as 007 in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), has decided to retire from acting. He made this announcement through a heartfelt social media post, acknowledging the difficulty of this choice. With a distinguished career that also includes Becoming Bond, Emmanuelle’s Secret, and The Man from Hong Kong among other notable roles, Lazenby now prioritizes his family life and age-related considerations.

George Lazenby retires from acting

He expressed that coming to this conclusion wasn’t simple, but now it’s time for him to share the news: he is retiring from his professional career. The actor known for “Becoming Bond” shared that he will no longer attend work engagements, grant interviews, or sign autographs.

He’s enjoyed the journey but finding old age isn’t, he noted. Following expressions of gratitude to friend and manager Anders Frejdh and the audience for their “warm affection,” Lazenby shared his intention to dedicate the remaining years of his life to his family and dearest people.

Lazenby’s acting career 

Instead of describing it as “Apart from bringing the captivating 007 to life, Lazenby boasts an impressive resume with a role in 64 films,” after his success in the 1969 Bond movie, his career took flight. Notable performances include “The Man from Hong Kong” released in 1975 and the 1993 Civil War drama “Gettysburg.” Most recently, he made an appearance in the 2024 film titled “Mundije.”

In 2019, I shared with the Sydney Morning Herald my experiences taking on the role of 007. I confessed that I had an overabundance of confidence back then, jokingly admitting I was clueless about acting when I first stepped into those famous shoes. “Really,” I said, “for someone with no prior experience in acting, I gave it a rather mediocre try…But eventually, I did manage to figure out how to deliver a convincing performance.”
