Colin Farrell Opens up About the Movie He Believes Is Perfect

Colin Farrell and director Martin McDonagh have worked together successfully for years, starting with their 2008 film, In Bruges. Farrell’s performance in that movie won him a Golden Globe, and it began a strong creative partnership that continued with Seven Psychopaths and their latest film, the highly praised The Banshees of Inisherin.

Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, frequent collaborators, worked together again on the film Banshees, earning Farrell a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination. Although he didn’t win the Oscar in 2023, Farrell’s career has continued to flourish, thanks in part to some valuable guidance he received early on from a fellow Irish actor.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Colin Farrell remembered a supportive moment with Pierce Brosnan right before he started filming his first American movie, Tigerland. Brosnan gave him a big hug and encouraged him to “keep being bold.” Farrell wasn’t sure if Brosnan realized he was particularly bold at the time, but he’s carried those words with him ever since.

Now 49, Farrell sees boldness as being true to yourself and living a meaningful life. He explained to Sandler that it’s about chasing what really matters – like being a good parent or creating art – even when it’s difficult. He admits life can be tough and make you want to withdraw, but believes the best approach is to persevere.

Farrell chooses roles that appeal to his own preferences. He told Rotten Tomatoes that his five favorite films are diverse, including classics like Lawrence of Arabia and entertaining movies like Back to the Future. But he especially loves the 1987 British film Withnail and I.

He called the film a brilliant depiction of the vibrant and chaotic spirit of the time, praising its performances as both funny and deeply moving. He especially admired Richard E. Grant’s work, and explained that at its heart, the movie is a touching story of friendship that ultimately ends with a sad, solitary goodbye.

Colin Farrell is having a very busy year with several big projects lined up. Recently, he was photographed in Hollywood, casually running to the grocery store in his pajamas – a down-to-earth moment that quickly spread online as fans eagerly await his return to TV. He’s currently promoting the second season of his Apple TV+ show, Sugar, which will officially launch on June 19th.

I’m really excited for the new season! Colin Farrell is back as John Sugar, the private investigator who just gets movies, and this time he’s working with his friend Shea Whigham, which is cool. Plus, it sounds like he’s getting back into the Batman suit soon. He’s been saying the script for The Batman Part II is incredible – he actually used the word ‘tasty’ to describe it, which is a fun detail!
