Jared Leto’s Skeletor Is ‘The Embodiment of Toxic Masculinity’ In Masters Of The Universe — Seriously?

First, He-Man started using different pronouns, and now Skeletor is returning as more than just a bad guy – he’s being portrayed as an example of harmful masculine traits.

That’s how the director of Masters of the Universe, Travis Knight, is now presenting Jared Leto’s take on the famous villain in the new movie.

Yes, really.

A faithful recreation?

In an Empire interview, director Knight explained that Jared Leto’s portrayal of Skeletor will stay true to the character’s iconic look—including the skull face—but will also explore his character with a modern understanding of psychology. Knight described Skeletor as a representation of harmful masculine traits, saying this without any sense of contradiction.

The timing couldn’t be more awkward.

Leto has faced numerous serious accusations, including predatory behavior and sexual assault, and these claims are receiving renewed attention. He’s now being widely discussed as an example of harmful, traditional masculinity.

It feels less like a deliberate choice and more like Jared Leto was simply playing a character very similar to himself – someone insecure and controlling. Interestingly, he was the one who actively pursued this role.

Knight explained that Leto was drawn to the part because he truly connected with the character. “He was eager to give it his all,” Knight continued, “and we eventually created something I’m very pleased with.”

Presenting Skeletor as an example of harmful masculinity, and choosing a controversial actor like Leto to play him, seems like a risky move for the film’s public image. This is particularly true since the movie is heavily relying on people’s fond memories of the original cartoon and its characters.

So far, Jared Leto hasn’t participated in promoting the project, and he hasn’t even posted the trailer to his 11.7 million Instagram followers.

Knight Keeps It Classic?

Even though Skeletor’s character is changing with the times, he’ll still maintain a stylish look. The creator, Knight, is focused on getting the visual design right, and specifically decided against having Skeletor wear a golden mask as initially considered.

As Knight explained to Empire magazine, he firmly rejected any attempts to soften Skeletor’s appearance. He stated, ‘I said, no way. Skeletor has a skull face.’ He emphasized that Skeletor is a fully expressive, talking skull, and that was non-negotiable.

The movie Masters of the Universe will be released in theaters on June 5, 2026. Nicholas Galitzine stars as both Prince Adam and He-Man, alongside Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Camila Mendes as Teela, and other cast members.
