MAGIC: THE GATHERING Movie Is Officially Gaining Momentum

A huge new movie based on Magic: The Gathering is in the works and gaining momentum. We’ve been anticipating this film for about a year, and the excitement is building. Currently being developed by Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro, Matt Johnson is set to direct. He recently shared some exciting early details with MovieWeb (as reported by CBR).

Adapting video games into movies is common, and we’ve seen many attempts – from titles like Uno and Magic 8 Ball to Clue, Monopoly, and even Tag. Fantasy role-playing games have also been adapted before, like Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves in 2023. These adaptations can be hit or miss, but we’re optimistic about the upcoming movie based on Magic: The Gathering (MTG).

Since its release in 1993, Magic: The Gathering (MTG) has cultivated a remarkably dedicated fanbase. Until recently, no one had attempted to fully explore and adapt its vast and complex world into a film. This week, Johnson discussed the movie’s development process in an interview with MovieWeb.

The director says they’re still actively working on the project, which is the largest of their career. They’re excited it’s moving forward and currently working at full speed.

Great news! This large-scale film project is officially moving forward. Deadline reported in June that Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald joined the team as writers, and it was later confirmed that Johnson will be directing.

What Will the Magic: The Gathering Movie Be About?

Because the movie adaptation is still in the early stages, it’s difficult to predict exactly how the story will unfold. For those who don’t know, the Magic: The Gathering game has a continuing story woven into its card sets. Early sets focused on the conflict between the powerful wizard Urza and the Phyrexians, while later sets introduced groups like the Gatewatch and villainous Planeswalkers such as Nicol Bolas. Given the game’s vast universe, it’s impossible to say which characters the movie will highlight. I suspect Hasbro and Legendary might even create entirely new characters for the film.

When Is Magic: The Gathering Coming Out?

We don’t have any news yet about when the next Magic: The Gathering set will be released or when production will begin. However, there’s exciting news about Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere universe!
