Sonic the Hedgehog has been a huge success for Sega in movie theaters, with three films released and another one planned. Now, Sega is bringing another of its popular video games to the big screen: The House of the Dead. Isabela Merced will star in the film adaptation.
Paul W.S. Anderson, the director known for the successful Resident Evil movies, is set to direct a new project. While a distribution company hasn’t been confirmed, Rocket Science is currently looking for one. Isabela Merced is gaining recognition in the genre space, recently appearing as Hawkgirl in Superman and Dina in The Last of Us.
If you didn’t play The House of the Dead in arcades back in the day, here’s a quick explanation. Released in 1997, this fast-paced horror game let players shoot their way through hordes of zombies and set a new benchmark for the genre. You progress by clearing areas and battling bosses with names drawn from tarot’s Major Arcana – like the Magician and the Chariot. What made it stand out was that the zombies actually ran at you, a feature that likely influenced later zombie films like 28 Days Later and World War Z.
Anderson expressed his long-standing love for the game The House of the Dead and excitement about adapting it into a film starring Isabela. He hopes this film will launch a major franchise, allowing them to explore the detailed world and story that SEGA has built over many years through a series of movies.
We will keep you posted on any future updates.
