HBO Is Turning Beloved RPG Into a TV Show — But Game Creators Won’t Be Involved

HBO is creating a live-action TV series based on the popular video game Baldur’s Gate. Craig Mazin, who successfully adapted The Last of Us, is heading up the project. Instead of simply recreating the game’s story, the series will continue the narrative of Baldur’s Gate 3, showing fans what happens after the events they already know in the world of Faerûn.

Mazin, a dedicated fan of both the game and Dungeons & Dragons, has spent almost 1,000 hours playing Baldur’s Gate 3. He’s thrilled to be working on bringing its characters and story to life. He praised the game’s creator, Swen Vincke, and his team for their excellent adaptation of D&D.

He expressed gratitude to Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast for giving him the opportunity to work on the project, and assured them he would treat the setting and characters with care. He excitedly stated, “I’m eager to help bring Baldur’s Gate and its amazing characters to life with as much passion and respect as possible.”

Although Craig Mazin is excited about a potential TV series, the team at Larian Studios, who originally created Baldur’s Gate 3, won’t be working on it. Video game journalist Geoff Keighley reported on social media that Larian has stated they have no role in the show’s development.

Larian, the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, tell me they have no involvement in the series.

The upcoming series will follow a team of adventurers as they cross paths with familiar faces like Astarion and Shadowheart. There’s talk that the creator, Mazin, might bring back some of the original game’s voice actors for guest appearances or ongoing roles. However, because the show is still being written, it likely won’t be released until 2027 or 2028 at the earliest.

Following the conclusion of The Last of Us, Craig Mazin will focus his efforts on this new HBO series. While the story’s specifics remain under wraps, and no actors have been confirmed yet, more information is expected soon.
