How To Unlock Scholar And Undertaker In Elden Ring Nightreign DLC

Elden Ring’s Nightreign started with eight different playable characters, called nightfarers, each with their own special skills and ways to play. Now, the game’s first expansion, The Forsaken Hollows, adds two more nightfarers – Scholar and Undertaker – to give players even more variety.

The Scholar is a support character who excels at boosting allies and weakening enemies. They gain extra benefits from using Arcane-based builds and have a unique ability to improve items just by using them. In contrast, the Undertaker is a strong, faith-based character built for aggressive play. They deal massive damage with their ultimate, which can be used repeatedly with their special skill, and also offer some healing capabilities.

I’m so excited about the new characters, and I wanted to share how to play as them! Here’s what you need to do to unlock the Scholar and the Undertaker.

How to unlock Scholar and Undertaker in Elden Ring Nightreign

To get the Scholar and Undertaker nightfarers, you first need to buy and install The Forsaken Hollows DLC. You won’t be able to access these characters without this expansion.

After installing The Forsaken Hollows DLC, you’ll need to defeat the first boss, Tricephalos, at least once. Then, you can talk to the Iron Menial at Roundtable Hold. If you’ve already defeated Tricephalos, this conversation will start automatically as soon as you load the game with the DLC installed.

The Iron Menial will give you a general idea of what to do, eventually asking you to find the Small Jar Merchant. You can find this merchant by exploring the left hallways of Roundable Hold, or by choosing “Small Jar Bazaar” from your fast travel options.

When you get there, talk to the Small Jar Merchant. He’ll direct you to a door. Go through that door, and you’ll immediately start a fight with the Dreglord. Don’t try to win—you’re supposed to lose! Just let him defeat you, and you’ll see a cutscene. You’ll get a chance to properly fight the Dreglord later, after you complete the first new expedition in the DLC, called Balancers.

Okay, so once I got back to Roundtable Hold and had control of my character again, I headed back to that door next to the little Jar Merchant. That leads to a new room where I met the Scholar and the Undertaker – pretty cool!

Okay, so I talked to both the Scholar and the Undertaker, and that unlocked them for me! Now they’re officially part of my team, which is awesome – I can bring them along on any adventure I want. Hopefully, with them by my side, I’ll finally have better luck taking down that Dreglord next time, fingers crossed!
