In a recent interview with Variety, Brendan Fraser discussed how years of performing physically demanding roles took a toll on his body.
Brendan Fraser shared that talking with Dwayne Johnson helped him understand he needed to act for his own well-being, not just to physically exhaust himself for the sake of a performance.
Fraser recalls frequently getting hurt while filming a low-budget movie in Ontario between 2007 and 2009, but he continued performing the stunts anyway.
He described reaching a breaking point around 2007-2009, admitting he was playing while injured but hiding it. This led him to realize he needed to understand why he was pushing himself so hard. “I was getting older, and it was starting to take a toll,” Fraser said. “If I wanted to keep going, I had to seriously examine why I was letting myself get hurt.”
He confessed he used to think a role wasn’t worthwhile unless it caused him physical pain. Fraser also explained that watching other actors show vulnerability and put in effort helped him realize the importance of finding a balance between strength and being open.
He observed other performers and realized that appearing strong and unfeeling—avoiding vulnerability—felt more challenging than actually experiencing a setback or loss.
Fraser revealed that his physically demanding career required several surgeries over seven years. He had a partial knee replacement, a laminectomy to address spinal issues, and vocal cord surgery, all of which allowed him to keep working through years of performing intense stunts and action-packed roles.
Brendan Fraser’s experience demonstrates how physically and emotionally draining action movies and challenging roles can be for performers. It also emphasizes how crucial it is for actors to understand their limits and put their well-being first, even when facing work pressures.
