Kristen Stewart Calls Acting “Embarrassing” and “Unmasculine”

Kristen Stewart has discussed how Method acting – a technique where actors deeply immerse themselves in a role – can be experienced differently by men and women in the film industry.

In a recent New York Times interview, she explained that acting naturally leaves performers feeling exposed. She thinks some actors use Method acting as a way to cope with, rather than confront, this vulnerability.

Stewart believes that performing involves surrendering control and allowing yourself to be vulnerable. She noted that this can be particularly challenging, often causing discomfort for men.

She explained that performing is naturally a risky endeavor, and she finds it both awkward and traditionally seen as unfeminine. She believes acting, which requires speaking lines written by others, is fundamentally about taking a submissive role. Stewart also noted that she doesn’t often encounter actresses who use the Method acting technique, and wondered aloud, “Are there any famous female actors known for using the Method?”

The conversation started when the interviewer mentioned Marlon Brando’s famous mispronunciation of “Krypton” in the 1978 film “Superman.” Sean Penn once theorized that Brando did this intentionally to maintain his self-respect while working on a large-scale movie. Stewart then pointed out that male actors are often praised for staying true to themselves, whereas women are criticized for doing the same thing.

She commented that Brando seemed heroic, questioning how the situation would be viewed if a woman had done the same thing. Stewart clarified she wasn’t criticizing Brando, stating she had no intention of attacking him.

She explained that some male actors try to appear strong and confident right before filming emotionally challenging scenes. She said they seem to believe that acting tough helps them avoid feeling embarrassed when they have to cry on camera, describing it as a way to ‘push through’ any discomfort. She also noted that this practice can create the impression that great acting is an unusual talent, accessible to only a few.

Stewart recalled asking a fellow actor if he’d ever witnessed a woman approach acting with the same intense, immersive “Method” style some men use. He immediately replied, “Oh, actresses are crazy.” Stewart felt this response confirmed her belief that women aren’t given the same artistic freedom or respect in their acting process as men.
