The new Disney movie, Zootopia 2, is a huge success at the box office worldwide, especially in China. It’s earned more money in China than the entire run of Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, and is now the fourth highest-grossing Hollywood film ever released there.
As of December 5th, Zootopia 2 has earned $177 million in the US and Canada, and $485 million internationally, for a global total of $662 million.
Going into the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the movie was predicted to earn $125 million in the U.S. and $270 million globally over the five-day period.
I was blown away by how well it did! It made $158 million here in North America and an incredible $560.3 million worldwide just in its opening weekend. That’s the biggest opening ever for an animated movie, and the fourth biggest opening weekend of all time, period! Here in the U.S. and Canada, it brought in $100.3 million over those three days.
China played a huge role in the success of Zootopia 2. The movie earned an impressive $271.6 million during its opening weekend there and made history as the first Hollywood film to earn over $100 million in a single day in China, achieving this on Saturday, November 29th.
In comparison, Infinity War made $382.7 million internationally (across 52 countries) and topped the box office charts in every one of them. Its international debut was the second-biggest of all time, only behind The Fate of the Furious. IMAX showings brought in $18.5 million worldwide, exceeding the international and Chinese totals for The Force Awakens.
As a huge fan, seeing how well Zootopia 2 did really highlights just how vital China has become for any big Hollywood movie. It also proves that animated films aren’t just for kids anymore – they can be massive global hits that everyone enjoys!
