Cynthia Erivo Addresses Her WICKED: FOR GOOD “Sex Cardigan”

The brief intimate scene between Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) in the movie Wicked: For Good is surprisingly sparking a lot of debate. It’s notable because the scene, which takes place during the song “As Long As You’re Mine,” doesn’t show any nudity or much physical intimacy, yet it’s drawing strong reactions. While some are critical, many fans are actually loving it – and particularly, Elphaba’s cardigan that she wears beforehand. The cardigan has become so popular that Cynthia Erivo was asked about it and its meaning to Wicked fans during a recent press event, as reported by Deadline. Here’s what she said:

I wanted to show a different side of Elphaba, a more vulnerable and relaxed side that hadn’t been seen yet. Throughout the film, the audience has only known her as the powerful, defiant Wicked Witch. This scene was meant to briefly remove her tough exterior and reveal a softer, more human side – someone capable of intimacy and deserving of love, not to objectify her, but to show her capacity for connection.

The scene includes a very attractive Fiyero, reminiscent of a romance novel hero. It seems both characters are equally appealing and clearly respect and are attracted to each other. We agree with Cynthia Erivo’s assessment – the scene isn’t exploitative at all. Ultimately, it’s just a playful moment, even with the suggestive lingerie and a handsome prince taking it off.
