Judi Dench, the renowned 90-year-old actress, has shared that her eyesight has deteriorated so much that she is now unable to recognize faces. She discussed this challenge during a recent interview on ITV on November 25th.
Judi Dench has explained she’s unable to watch TV or read due to vision loss. She stated, “You haven’t seen me on screen recently because I can’t see anymore.”
The actress has a condition called age-related macular degeneration, which affects her central vision. This makes it difficult to see faces, read, drive, and notice small details.
Judi Dench turned to Ian McKellen and said she could see his shape and knew him well, but confessed she often struggles to recognize people. McKellen playfully asked if she ever approaches complete strangers and greets them as if they’re old friends, which Dench admitted she sometimes does, prompting laughter.

Judi Dench first revealed she had macular degeneration in 2012, explaining that one eye was very dry while the other was experiencing fluid buildup. She’s received treatments like injections to help manage the condition, but her eyesight has continued to worsen. Recent reports from 2024 suggest she’s largely stopped acting, and her vision makes it hard for her to go out without assistance. Despite this, she remains eager to continue working whenever she can.
