Blumhouse to Adapt ‘Something Is Killing the Children’ as Movie and Animated Series – Here’s What We Know

Blumhouse, the production company behind successful films like Black Phone 2 and the soon-to-be-released Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, will be making a movie based on the popular comic book Something Is Killing the Children.

Since it first appeared in 2019, the comic book series, created by James Tynion IV and artist Werther Dell’Edera, has caught the attention of Hollywood.

The comic follows Erica Slaughter, a monster hunter dedicated to shielding children from creatures invisible to adults.

She belongs to the Order of St. George, a hidden group dedicated to battling monsters in secret. The series she works on has received widespread praise and numerous Eisner Awards, recognizing Scott Tynion as Best Writer in 2021, 2022, and 2023, and winning Best Continuing Series alongside another title in 2022.

Okay, so I just heard some awesome news! Blumhouse—those guys who consistently deliver great horror—are tackling Something Is Killing the Children. But they’re not just making a movie, they’re going all-in with both a live-action film and an animated series geared towards adults. As a horror fan, I’m seriously excited to see how they bring this story to life in two different formats!

Scott Tynion will work directly on the upcoming television adaptation. For the live-action film, Shaun Sutton and Ryan Turek will be executive producers, and Scott Tynion and Stephen Christy will produce on behalf of Boom! Studios.

Before Blumhouse secured the rights, both Lionsgate and Netflix had shown interest. Netflix had even started developing a live-action series with Mike Flanagan and the creators of the show Dark, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, but decided against continuing with the project at the end of 2024.

According to CNN, Blumhouse quickly decided to focus on the story’s central concept: children being able to see monsters that adults can’t. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the recent success of horror movies like Zach Cregger’s Weapons boosted interest in the project.

This agreement is a significant development for Something Is Killing the Children, allowing fans to experience the story as a movie and a TV series.

As a horror fan, I think Blumhouse getting involved with this franchise is brilliant – they just get suspense and scary movies. What’s even more exciting is that they’re developing both a live-action film and an animated series at the same time! It feels like a really smart way to build out the world of the original comic and honestly, as a fan, I’m really hyped to see where they take it. There’s a lot to be excited about!
