New ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Trailer Teases Cadet Romance and Angry Paul Giamatti

At New York Comic Con on Saturday, Paramount+ unveiled a new trailer for its forthcoming series, *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy*.

The new show, which is the first live-action series in this franchise to center on young Starfleet cadets, will debut on January 15th.

Okay, so the new trailer is *way* more dramatic than the first one, which, honestly, people were pretty divided on – I even saw one comment calling it “TikTok Space P,” which is…a choice. But this new look? It’s got some actual romance brewing between the cadets, and Paul Giamatti looks *furious* as the villain. He’s clearly going to be a problem, and I’m here for it.

Holly Hunter plays the chancellor in this new series, and Robert Picardo is back as The Doctor. Fans of Tatiana Maslany, who starred in *Orphan Black*, will also see her appear in several episodes during the first season.

Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, and Zoë Steiner star as the cadets. The series is led by co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, with additional executive producers including Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber.

The new series, *Starfleet Academy*, is debuting as Paramount+’s *Star Trek* universe goes through changes. Several previous shows – *Discovery*, *Star Trek: Picard*, *Lower Decks*, and *Star Trek: Prodigy* – have finished their runs. At the same time, *Strange New Worlds* recently returned for a third season and has been renewed for a fifth and final season.

As the Star Trek franchise evolves, Paramount+ hopes the new series, *Starfleet Academy*, will draw in a younger audience and ensure the future of the Star Trek universe.
