Welcome back to Godolkin University! This place is… complicated. Think of Homelander as a god-like figure, and regular humans aren’t exactly welcomed. If you have superpowers, though, you can really succeed here. Last season, we started to realize Godolkin University wasn’t all it seemed, and season two will dive even deeper into its troubled past, revealing how the university started and the secrets of Project Odessa.
The show introduces this mysterious project in the first episode. We then see a flashback to 1967 at Vought, where we meet a young Dr. Thomas Godolkin, who had started God U two years earlier. He rushes to a room where scientists are preparing to inject themselves with what appears to be a very early form of Compound V. He tries to stop them, but arrives too late. Everyone dies horribly, except for Thomas, who loses consciousness in the smoke and fire. It’s unclear whether he survived the incident.
Currently, Jordan and Emma are back at God U thanks to Cate’s influence, and they’ve been shown a misleading statement claiming they’re innocent. Unfortunately, Andre died while in custody, but Marie managed to escape and is now a fugitive. Vought dispatches a superpowered individual to find Marie, and almost succeeds, until Starlight (Annie) intervenes and rescues her. She convinces Marie that the best course of action is to return to God U, hoping Vought will then stop pursuing her.
Annie explains to Marie that Thomas Godolkin originally created God U as part of a program called Project Odessa. She believes they might be restarting the project and asks Marie to help her investigate and stop it. Annie isn’t sure who she’s working with, and most of their allies are either in prison or, like Butcher, have gone off on their own.
Marie agrees to return, particularly after she thinks Cate is gone. Cate, having read Marie’s mind, wonders about the mysterious “Project Odessa.” However, Marie has more pressing issues. Luckily, Emma is eager to investigate and manages to convince Polarity, Andre’s father, to use his influence to help. Their research leads them to a secret room containing disturbing Nazi and white supremacist items, along with old Vought company artifacts. Emma discovers files detailing the deaths of infants, and the last file reveals a photograph of Marie Moreau, confirming that she is, in fact, the subject of Project Odessa.
I’m really hooked on this storyline – Marie’s struggling with the idea that she’s supposed to be this special operative, especially since her abilities didn’t even kick in until she was a teenager. It’s totally understandable why she’s pushing back against being seen as some kind of manufactured weapon by Vought-Godolkin, even though it kind of makes sense with Cipher suddenly being so interested in her. It’s heartbreaking to see her try and connect with Pam, her mom’s old friend who was in her baby pictures. They’ve been distant since Marie accidentally caused the death of Pam’s parents, but Pam agreed to meet, which is a huge step.
Pam claims she knows nothing about Odessa, but reveals to Marie that the photo of her birth was taken at a fertility clinic called God U. She explains that Marie’s parents struggled to have a child for many years, and Vought offered to cover all the expenses. Pam shows Marie several pictures, including one of Cipher, who was the doctor that delivered her. The conversation takes a turn for the worse when Marie learns that Pam adopted Annabeth and kept it a secret from her.
Okay, things are *really* heating up now that Jordan confessed to attacking Cate and finally told everyone how Andre Anderson died. I have a feeling this is just the beginning, and I’m so excited to see what else we find out about Project Odessa as Gen V season two continues. It’s going to be a wild ride!
