The series *Alien: Earth* is breaking new ground for the franchise. A major development is the introduction of hybrids – humans whose minds have been transferred into artificial bodies. We’ve already discovered, through the character of Wendy (Sydney Chandler), that the Xenomorphs have a complex language. Now, in the next-to-last episode, we find out hybrids like Wendy can learn this language and actually communicate with the Xenomorphs, leading to a surprising possibility: cooperation between the two.
Okay, so in the seventh episode, “Emergence,” things really hit the fan. Wendy – or Marcy, as we used to know her – and her brother Joe are making a break for it, trying to escape the Neverland facility on this remote tropical island, likely somewhere in the South Pacific. Before Dr. Sylvia gets…well, *attacked*, he manages to disable the trackers on the hybrid “Lost Boys.” This is huge, because it allows Wendy and another hybrid, Nibs, with Joe’s help, to make a run for the docks, hoping to steal a boat and get off the island. They finally realize they’re not safe as long as Boy Kavalier is calling the shots.
While Wendy, Peter, and Jack journey through the jungle, six armed soldiers from Weyland-Yutani, working for Morrow, arrive on Neverland Island. They intend to reclaim the alien creatures from the ship, believing they rightfully belong to the company. The soldiers ambush the group, but Wendy has a secret weapon: she deliberately released the Xenomorph from the research facility, and it’s been secretly following them. Chaos quickly erupts as the creature attacks.
Wendy discovered she could not only understand the Xenomorphs-confirming they have their own language-but also communicate back to them. She’s now able to command them, and the result is terrifyingly reminiscent of the original *Predator* movie. A Xenomorph bursts from the trees and swiftly kills all six soldiers in a brutal attack.
Following the attack, Wendy manages to reconnect with the creature, who now behaves submissively, like a scared puppy – much to her brother’s shock. She even strokes it, despite the soldiers’ blood still visible on its face. After Wendy speaks to it again, the Xenomorph quickly disappears into the jungle. Joe immediately asks Wendy what she said to it. She believes she told it to “hide and follow.” Incredibly, this being with a human spirit has formed a connection with a creature previously known only as a ruthless killer.
Wendy’s ability to communicate with and control the Xenomorph highlights why Weyland-Yutani is so desperate to recapture it. As seen in James Cameron’s *Aliens*, the company wants to weaponize the creature, believing a controlled Xenomorph would make them unbeatable. In the corporate war between Weyland-Yutani and its four rivals, known as “The Five,” this would be a significant edge. *Aliens* also showed that Xenomorphs operate as a hive mind, directed by the Queen. Wendy’s communication suggests she’s effectively speaking *as* the Queen, explaining why the Xenomorph obeys her – and this could fundamentally alter our understanding of the entire franchise.
Alien: Earth season one is currently dropping new episodes on Tuesdays on FX and FX on Hulu.
