CRITICAL ROLE Campaign 4 Reveals Cast, System, World, and More

Will Matt Mercer Be in Critical Role Campaign 4?

haven’t we made it clear that for the first time in a decade, Matt Mercer is joining a Critical Role campaign as a player? Absolutely! We can hardly wait to see him in action.

Who Is in the Full Cast of Critical Role Campaign 4?

In addition to Matt Mercer, there are several other talented players in the Critical Role Campaign 4. Among them are Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham. They’re joined by Luis Carazo, Robbie Daymond, Aabria Iyengar, Whitney Moore, and Alex Ward. Brennan Lee Mulligan takes on the role of Game Master in this campaign as well.

What Game System Will Critical Role Campaign 4 Use?

The upcoming Campaign 4 for Critical Role will utilize the Dungeons & Dragons (2024 edition), along with custom content from Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins of Darrington Press. This news has generated much anticipation! We’re eager to discover the unique elements their homebrew will introduce.

Marisha Ray, the Creative Director, co-founder, and performer on Critical Role, reveals their system preference for Campaign 4: “For all the worlds we create in our content at Critical Role, we’ve always believed in using the system that best suits the story we aim to tell. With a wealth of tabletop role-playing game systems that the cast is fond of, we can’t wait to delve deeper into both Daggerheart and Dungeons & Dragons in our upcoming (and far-off) adventures.

Or as Matt Mercer shares in the video above, “Daggerheart or D&D, we say ‘Both!’”

What World Will Critical Role Campaign 4 Take Place In?

The Critical Role Campaign 4 will be venturing into a fresh world called Aramánin, adopting a West Marches style of gameplay. For those new to this term, West Marches refers to an approach that emphasizes the exploration of a world and player-driven stories. This style allows players a greater degree of control in their role-playing game (RPG) experience compared to other methods. As explained by Brennan Lee Mulligan, “The West Marches campaign style is essentially a shared world with more adventurers who are player characters than can gather around the table during one session. Additionally, it mirrors the format of fantasy storytelling that people are deeply acquainted with and cherish.

In the realm of Aramán, where Critical Role Campaign 4 unfolds, we don’t have extensive knowledge at this point, but our curiosity is piqued! Mulligan has hinted that it shares a connection with Exandria and explores themes about mortals and their interactions with the gods. He explains, “In this world, the gods choose to prioritize their roles in the cosmos over the welfare of mortals, leading to an unprecedented choice. As a result, we see the gods engage in conflict with mortals. This war is devastating, with many mortals remaining loyal to the gods during the battle. However, ultimately, the gods are vanquished and slain.

This brings us to Aramán, seven decades post-revolution. The current state of magic is complex – it’s wild, unruly, and often unpredictable compared to its past functionality. A question arises regarding the afterlife, specifically where spirits of the deceased are now heading, as gods no longer separate souls to distinct afterlives.

What Will the Story of Critical Role Campaign 4 Be?

In the world of Aramán, a looming darkness emerges amidst revolution, a relic from the time 70 years ago when the Shapers were slain – powerful beings who, in their arrogance, brought forth their offspring into eternal darkness. A new era brings a fresh conflict, and our protagonists find themselves called upon to face this challenge.

Essentially, according to Mulligan, he simplified his approach to storytelling into five key elements:

1. Action and adventure – involving struggles, battles, courage, and risk-taking.
2. Strong family ties – exploring profound connections and the essence of deep familial love.
3. The end – encompassing finality or consequences in a narrative.
4. Enchantment – representing the core concept of fantasy that anything imaginable can occur.
5. Romance – including affectionate encounters, as people generally enjoy these moments in stories. When combined, these five elements make up what we find appealing in fantasy storytelling.

Do We Know Anything About Critical Role Campaign 4‘s Characters?

In the upcoming season 4 of Critical Role, we’re still not clear about the details of each character. However, we do know that they will be divided into three main groups: Soldiers, Schemers, and Seekers.

A statement discloses a snippet about the characters, together with a disclosure that not all the cast members mentioned earlier will be appearing together consistently throughout the series. Critical Role reveals that the opening four episodes of Campaign 4 will serve as an overture, presenting and intricately connecting all 13 cast members in various scenes before the narrative splits into three smaller groups – Soldiers, Schemers, and Seekers – for the remainder of the campaign. These distinct groups will be linked by common themes and genres throughout.

This system, as explained by Brennan Lee Mulligan, offers us a broader perspective of the world, bringing together various tables that blend and combine. However, the difficulty lies in managing a massive ensemble of legendary characters embarking on multiple journeys simultaneously – a scope and scale I’ve never ventured into before.

Ultimately, Critical Role Campaign 4 split fans based on the specific type of gameplay they preferred to explore. To sum it up, Critical Role established three distinct tables: “Soldiers”, “Seekers”, and “Schemers”. The “Soldiers” table caters to individuals who favor a more action-packed, conflict-driven narrative where peaceful solutions are less frequent. On the other hand, “The Seekers” group delves into the cosmos, magic systems, philosophical questions within this universe, and explores themes such as divinity, arcane, demons, fairies, dragons, and more. Lastly, the “Schemers” table focuses on intrigue, espionage, political machinations, and the complex relationships between characters, non-player characters (NPCs), institutions, and power struggles – their adventures are often cloak-and-dagger affairs involving enemies lurking in their own backyards.

Eagerly intrigued, we’re convinced that we’ll take a liking to the Schemers. Yet, our minds wander as we ponder about the quest of the Seekers.
